 Definitely not a Scalie, eye a bit big, no idea what it is but we had a huge school of them under the boat when chasing whiting behind 3 mile not too long ago. Died after about 5 mins under a balloon

Scaly Makerel

Sat, 2015-03-14 19:01

To me its definitely a Scaly Mackerel. We use to catch them all the time from the Rockingham jetty years ago.
The name was very fitting as the scales would come of the fish very easy when handled.

I am sure this has been discussed previously and will endeavour to locate the thread and post the link.

Clupeidae Family

Sat, 2015-03-14 22:09

I believe the fish is part of the clueidae family and have found the link below.

http://bie.ala.org.au/image-search/showSpecies?taxonRank=family&scientificName=CLUPEIDAE

It clearly identifies:-

Mulies = AKA Australian Sardines

Scaley Mackerel = AKA Pilchard (That's what I knew them as)

The one in the pick above which I will still claim to be a Scaley Mackerel does not seem to be documented as of yet in the link provided. It appears to be similar to a Blueback Sprat or the Maray.

Note the names listed are the common names and not the scientific names. The link to the Australian Museum website clearly illustrates this with the Sardinella lemuru (Scaley Mackerel) with the specimen only being registered in 2010.

Whatever, you want to call them they are good bait.

 Ain't no scaly, wrong shape, wrong colour..:wrong fish

this is funny it's just a stinky mulie  (or pilly) if you from the east...if in doubt freeze it, defrost it, freeze again, stamp on it and put a a bag with a $15 price tag..... will then look exactly the same as the crap sold at a servo.
