Electric Reel Ban (NSW not WA)

This was talked about in WA not long ago but it now looks like NSW proposing to move ahead with an electric reel ban.

I wonder how long before they try to raise it here again if other states move forward with this?

10. Electric reels
Electric fishing reels are generally used when targeting deep water fish species such as
gemfish, blue-eye trevalla (blue-eye cod), hapuku, banded rock cod (bar cod) and bass groper.

Electrical reels appear to be increasing in availability and popularity. The current bag and size limits were developed based on traditional harvest methods of deck/hand winches. The bag and size limits are currently 5 deep sea fish in total, only 2 gemfish, and a boat trip limit of 10 gemfish. With such limits in place, deep water species can also be prone to high grading. They also are unlikely to survive any catch and release practices.

I&I NSW is becoming increasingly concerned about the current escalating investment and use of electric reels for fishing in NSW and potential impacts on deep sea fisheries resources. The majority of council members considered the use of electric reels was not a, traditional, acceptable form of recreational fishing and therefore, the use of powered/electric reels should be restricted.

Note: Electric reels are often necessary to allow people with disabilities to fish successfully. It is considered that the use of electric reels by people with disabilities is acceptable. Electric reels are also commonly used by charter boat operators but are already heavily restricted by the boat limit of 10 gemfish.

Motion: The council supports the banning of electric reels, subject to a permit system for
acceptable use (e.g. to assist disabled fishers). The council recommends that the ban be
implemented during the next review of bag and size limits and that the Minister consider issuing an investment warning in the near future to advise the recreational fishing sector of this position.

Moved: Charlie Howe. Seconded: John Drew. Carried. (Against: John Humphries, Ann Garard, Neil Ryan).

Electric Reel Ban

i think its a good move my self but i dont have one tho, fishing the deep i think should be rod and reel or deck winch, electric reels i think just takes the fun out of it,we can fish really deep and when you catch a good fish you would really enjoy it more if you got it the traditional way ,this is just what i think no offence to all those who have electric reels

Dont know if i'd call it fun

Dont know if i'd call it fun to wind up massive sinkers from 400m with no fish on :p. Agreed if you had some sort of deck winch and did nothing even when a fish is on though. Certainly when you have a fish on, you should work for your fish and bring it up yourself (after all, thats the fun, otherwise its probably cheaper to buy fillets, when you factor in all the gear, fuel, ice, boat, etc).

we were on apache once and

we were on apache once and these 2 asian fisherman were at the end both with electric reels. they caught more then the whole boat put together(even though quite a few crap fish) and i the skipper told me they go every week and they just fish till they get thier bag limit and thats there dinner for the week till next time they go out. once they have their bag limits of certain fish if they catch anymore(even if the fish are bigger then what they have) they give it to ppl who havent caught anything or low amounts. so i guess some ppl use them responsibley and sort of need them as these fisherman were fairly old. but i did see them on some of the smaller fish they fought it up them selfs.

That would be like me catching 30 crays and giving 24 away as I would be over limit?

I personally don't have a problem with electric reels

Fri, 2010-01-22 14:33

Not that I've used one though, I've never fished deep enough to warrant it. Also, it wasn't that long ago when a lot of people payed out on the deck winch based on the same, to easy, not sport fishing scenario. What a Croc !!

Electric reels

Are not and automatic sit back and it catches fish for you device....but there is professional ones that are.

You still have to pump and wind the fish up, but instead of winding you push a button. Where the godsend is winding up your sinker from those huge depths. Cranking a handle with 70oz of lead for 20 minutes just to check your bait gets a bit much very quickly.

Electric reels dont catch more fish but they do increase the number of anglers targetting the fish as it is not so difficult any more. Bag limits are the key, you notice they can take 5 fish we can take 2. Its not as easy as people may think..there is a lot of water..and greeneyed sharks..between everyone of those big fish you see. You have to be able to spend $200 on fuel and catch zip more times the you do.

Stupid idea

Just because a fish lives in 450metres of water they decide to make them practically inaccessable. As Noha said, bag limits are the answer.Bad weather, rough water and distance are going to regulate the no. of fish caught as it is and as was mentioned, deck winches aren't exactly sporting either. One or two hapuka or bass groper is going to keep you in fillets for a fair while so I wouldn't imagine trips to the shelf are going to be that frequent.I love my sportfishing but I don't mind fishing for the table either.
