The dreaded N wind.

Hey team.

Im curious to know how many fishwrecked users refuse to fish in the northerly winds. You always hear the saying that the fish dont bite on a northerly etc etc. With saturday looking so good wind wise, i was keen on heading out chasing bottom fish but the winds are NE to N to NW by the arvo.....Regardless of what everyone says, ill still go, but very curious to hear peoples responses on this.

Always worth being out there

Thu, 2011-05-26 10:03

Always worth being out there in my opinion! I would be out if I didnt have a wedding to go to! Haven't fished a north wind enough to know how bad it could be.

Would definitely prefer to fish with a bit of South in the wind, but i wouldn't not go fishing just because there is some north in it. If anything i find northerly winds a lot more unpredictable, often the weather websites way under call them imo. I would just plan your trip so your at least coming home with the wind.

Why is this so?

Thu, 2011-05-26 13:15

I know the wind will have some effect, but it doesn't change the currents, water temp, might be flatter than a southerly but so is a Easterly.

What's the opinions here as to why a notherly is so bad?

I am sure fish that are hungry down there dont care which way the wind is blowing.

Doesn't it have something to do with a barometric pressure drop?

Think your on the money there Grazee. I know some old salts who won't touch a Northerly mainly because of the unpredicability of the weather turing bad real fast. I've seen it first hand and nearly been caught out by it.

My old man won't put the the boat in at all if theres a anything from the north usually shuts the bottom fishing down.I have been out more than enough times to agree with him,Sometimes you will get nothing all day then the wind changes and instantly they come on the bite.....On the other hand nothing better than a strong nwester for landbased snapper fishing....As others have said aswell A northerly wind usually means a change in weather so you have to stay vigilant.

dhuis love a n-nw wind, the change in the barometric pressure from the end transition from high to next low moving in, caught heaps up north on a nw wind!

North east is shitty wheverer

Thu, 2011-05-26 18:29

North east is shitty wherever you are. The sea is nasty, the fish dont play and in Exy it makes the gulf too dirty to dive, hate it. Rather sit at home and drown my sorrows than bother getting the boat out.

North west is good for snapper in geographe bay, not bad for dhuies out further too :-)

Its more the north tide than North wind ,strong tide from the north will shut the fish down .but still better than sitting at home .working saturday morning may get a run in the arvo.

Northerly

Thu, 2011-05-26 18:58

Had the northerly wind and drift today and the fish just wouldn't play the game, could see them and on proven red ground. :(  I hate northerlies in Exxy, won't not fish on them, but just know its going to be a hard day.

Never really noticed a difference off Dampier... tides were always a lot more important that wind direction.

i have found that northerly currents can totally shut the fish down i've seen it every time i've been out and its been current from the north =no fish and northerly winds have caused the two most hairy boating moments i can remember but it looks too good on the weather so far to miss out on saturday so i'll be giving it a go.. cheers

Squid or King George Whitting

Thu, 2011-05-26 22:20

Hi Guys,  what about squidding and going for King George Whitting.  Does the Northerly wind have any effect on close to land type of fishing?

Cheers.

Northly Tide....

Thu, 2011-05-26 22:26

Northly tide = shut down fishing up my way but if you work hard you can still pull fish... if the wind changes and the southerly kicks in the fish normally turn on big time...

NEasterly = sweetFA.

Nwester = fish.  If the current is from the North, I dont go deep I chase KGW around the 5FB.

The old saying hangs true I reckon. If winds have East, then fish are least.

not in kalbarri

Fri, 2011-05-27 23:22

not in kalbarri! the east to ne days no swell are the days id take the tinny up 25mile and sit there all day catching pinkys! go out to between 12 and 20fthm and everywhere you drop u get onto the fish! but i do agree the north tide shuts the fish down out deeper but frick the crays go bananas with a north tide! especially off the shelf! we used to watch this crazy wetliner shultzy go out from dongara on a n to nw blow and hed come back loaded with dhuis from his trip. as soon as the wind went around to the w-sw and the barro pressure went up the fish would stop! same as at the abrohlos! n-nw winds days are great if you know how to read the wx conditions properly and make sure you have a following sea on the way home!!
