Display model reel - Full price or discounted?

Do you guys think display model reels should be discounted?  My wife just purchased a fishing reel for Christmas ( I've been a good boy!).  Shop said it was last one so she bought it. First question I asked was did they take it out of the cabinet? Yes they did.

What do you think?

Original box and not used in action, then provided they declared it I wouldn't have any concerns. What are you worried about ?

I haven't seen reel yet but just off the top of my head, scuff marks from being screwed onto 50 rods, knocked around, possibly dropped, drag screwed up tight for who knows how long.

Thanks for your input JF, I'll start there but I don't like My chances!

Most local, independantly owned, tackle shops that I've been to lately display 100% of their stock in cabinets ready for potential buyers to touch and feel. If it aint visible, they don't have it. Will be a different story if you ordered online, or maybe a few large chain stores.

So what are  saying selthy?

So what are  saying selthy?  They took it out of the display cabinet. If they had a new one in the box I'd say i would have got that. This store is local and has a display cabinet with all different types of reels on display. If you enquire about a particular reel they open the display cabinet and get the reel out and give it to you to handle and then if you want a rod to go with it they put it on a rod and you can pretend your fishing for a second.  All the new reels are kept in separate cabinet. This cabinet isn't glass so you can't see in it. This is it how it works at this store.  Plus, someone with covid may touched the Eva knob. ;)

Just saying that from my experience a lot of independant tackle stores do not carry large quantaties of reels, particularly higher end reels, and it is not unusual to get sold one directly from the display cabinet.

Don't get me wrong the reel

Sat, 2022-12-17 04:58

Don't get me wrong the reel is already purchased ( and no it's not a Shimano sienna)  I don't have a leg to stand on. But I want a brand new reel for my bucks. The reel is probably fine

I am aware of the irony, that the rods are all in a rack for anyone to cast and whip around the store and then hit the aircon vent and every other rod in the vicinity trying to put it back in the rack for the next person to buy.

Do you want the reel or not?.

Sat, 2022-12-17 05:02

I work casually in an establishment that has multiple reel cabinets with some serious bling in em. If the display one is the last one in store we ask the punter if they'd like to buy it, I've never been knocked back and no we don't discount them, there's no need to as they're an unused product. Open the cabinet give it to the customer to look at and then put it back in the cabinet. They're pretty hard to trash on a showroom floor versus a day out on the water. Do you hit up Woolies for a discount on loose potatoes versus bagged ones?.

New reel

I wouldnt stress about it until you actually look at the reel.

Have bought plenty of reels from the cabinet over the years. And never had a problem.

Cheers to the fellas for some proper responses.

silver fox like I said I was aware of the irony in what I was saying. That analogy doesn't really compare. Plus, my wife does the shopping.

Display

Sat, 2022-12-17 16:19

Interestingly, a mate went to buy a couch from hardly normal, found one on display and said I'll take one of these thanks. They said sorry you can order one but there's a 3 month wait.. he said ok can I take the display model? They said yes but it'll cost you more, he said wtf? They said well it's more valuable as if it's not there they'll sell less of them on order.. and more valuable to the point where he didn't buy it!

Talking recently to a well-known reel servicing guy and he said that he would recommend this every time (surprise, surprise). He said a lot of reels (particularly Shimano) are pretty good out of the box but over-greasing is an issue and sometimes it's just old.

I would prefer a reel in a new box but would accept one that was on display if it passed the visual test. Rods on the other hand could be damaged and you might not be able to tell until used.
