Demersal Bag, Plus a New Minn Kota Technique
Headed out solo from Hillarys yesterday morning, as conditions dictated that you must. Always a little bit suspect of a complete “glass off” as experience suggests “no run no fun”. Worth a crack though.
Bagged out on demersals, but the bite was certainly slow. The "better half" was extremely happy with these specimens as she thinks they top the “edibility” criteria. Kilos of fillets vac packed and frozen within hours, and the frames ready to deliver to Fisheries (I have done a “deal” with Fisheries where I can get back my frames after it extracts the required information so I can use them for my burley – it is good to have demersal flesh in the burly). Nice fish and a nice result for our “premium fish fillets” store.
Also picked up half a dozen undersized pinkies and Breaksea. Undesirables included a 4-5ft wobby, a 5kg Eagle Ray, plenty of wrasse and parrot, and those evil red devil fish.
The exceptional windless conditions, and a bit of time, allowed me to give the Minn Kota troll track a test. After fishing with a good mate over East recently (http://www.fishwrecked.com/forum/quick-trip-east-%E2%80%93-mackies-pinkies-and-sweeties-north-moreton), I really liked his fishing technique in a sea channel environment and thought it would work on top of the nearshore reefs at Perth Metro (particularly the 3 Mile). I wanted to see if the Minn was capable of navigating a slow “drift” on a pre-defined course - you can record a track of GPS coordinates and then motor back to the start or finish of the track, when in the vicinity, using 1 of 20 motor speed settings. Of course performance will be influenced by wind and current on any given day but this feature of the Minn has too much potential to ignore.
I must say that it worked really well. I could “drift” at 0.4kn using speed setting 4, pretty much exactly on the track I had established. I cast lightly weighted snelled baits “upstream” and they sank slowly to the bottom and hit it just prior to being “dragged” (although plenty of other fishing methods would apply to the situation). I got all the Breaksea like this, plus bites and fish on most casts when over reefy ground in the middle of the day! This Minn Kota feature is quality.

Could have done with that
yesterday as everytime we set up to drift the conditions changed so we could seldom get over the little features we were trying to fish. Mind you we did ok, or at least my deckie, Pete D (FW Member) did ok with a 25kg Sambo, a 68cm Baldy and a 65cm Dhuie. All I managed was sweep after sweep and numerous undersized dhuies and pinkies. Still it was hardwork. The Minn Kota would certainly have made it a lot easier.

Baldie on the other hand.....had a fresh feed of Baldie tonite from a fish on Friday....we hardly ever get baldies as we fish jigs most of the time and only get the occational one, but we had a bait fish on the way home from a deep drop and man, how good is baldie on the BBQ!

yeah you need to tenderise it
yeah you need to tenderise it with a meat mallet then marinate it in Tabasco, Hoisin, HP sauce and fresh chilis for 2 days then batter and deep fry it for 20 minutes to taste the true flavour of baldy
