deckie / fishing buddy etticut

with the amount of people on this site and a few putting their hand up for deckie spots i thought maybe every one could voice there opinion of what they expect of the guest they take along to clear the air and make deckies/fishing buddys aware so there are no surprises.
for example i have a small tinny so i have too keep gear to a minimum and i make my deckies aware of this and it s&*ts me to tears when they bring a whole tackle store and crack it when i tell them it aint all coming aboard.

I have that problem with a couple of em, oops no wallet gota get home to kids, so called best mate even reckons we should take turns to pull the anchor, what a laugh I put up the expense of the boat he didn't want to take turns in the $3k for full anchor winch & all associated gear, LOL. I just expect they bring their own rods, can bring tackle if they wish as room not a prob, halves in fuel & bait, help with clean up after woulds & keep the SINKERS OFF the side of the boat.

Pulling anchor, help launch and retrieve, share of fuel and bait. The big one is helping with the clean up of the boat in my book................. no decent help with cleaning means no more rides in my boat

I agree with all that has

Tue, 2009-10-20 16:51

I agree with all that has been said, but as a deckie, let me say something to the skippers.

When you go out with people who are new to your boat, just be clear with them about what you want to do and what you expect them to do.  I've been out with some people who got upset if I started doing something and it wasn't the way they liked it.  If you prefer a job done your way, just say so.  Some deckies don't know what to do, so they stand there, but if you point out what you want, they'll usually do it.  good communication is key for both sides.

overall good advice! Thanks to all the skips out there who are kind enough to share with the rest of us!!

I definately agree on that.

Tue, 2009-10-20 17:16

I definately agree on that. Bit hard to learn to do things properly/better if you arent sure what to do, or even what you're supposed to do. Some direction or constructive criticism can go a long way. I'm sure theres a few things I can learn or improve on, but figuring them out is sometimes a hard part :p

For example, I didnt know about the beer thing, all you skippers had/have to do is ask ;)

My usual rule is at half the fuel (plus a bit), offer to get bait/ice, plus all other duties. And of course, split any fish I've caught.

jee I hope I never have to deckie for some of you guys, its a team effot everone pitches in if the anchor has to be pulled and the deckie is still pulling up the skip pulls the anchor ,cut the bait, and what ever needs doing to make the day enjoyable .all deckie should revolt make the skippers accountable, you pay half bait and fuel and bring beer ,then the skipper should put you on the fish or he gets to wash the boat by himself, while the deckie sits back with a nice cold beer .SKIPPERS BEWARE,

If you shell out the $ for a $150k boat, as the skip you need to get some perks. I agree with making it fun for everyone, but hey I did wait that extra minute for the deckie to pull up before readying to pull anchor, now he just has to clip in the lanyard when the winch has finished.        Money mouth

I've been lucky.

My best mate was always there to help out on our previous boat.

He'd help launch & retreive, pay his way with fuel/ice/food/drinks.

Only thing he couldn't do was reverse a trailer (not even a tandem axle trailer!).

If I had an amateur on board - the only thing I'd expect him/her to do... is keep out of my way!

I bought a boat and all the mod cons to go fishing because i enjoy fishing ,not thinking for one moment if i take people out fishing they will pay half the expencess.i don't need a deckie but do take people fishing, because i enjoy sharing my hobbie with the people who don't have a boat. sometimes deckies are better of just enjoying the ride as some can get in the way , I have spent days just driving the boat not even dropping a line ,I love my spot and seing a newbe pull up his first fish ,or a pb is a reward in itself,Jody is forever telling me i'll do that or thats my job ,shit if it needs doing and shes fishing then i'll do it or Jesse will,im not saying my deckies do nothing they have always chipped in and done there shear. enough said on this one happy fishing

Agree with you there Paul.  We have not taken out 'deckies' as such but family and friends have come for a ride.  We kind of think that we were going out anyway and if they want to chip in for fuel and bring some bait then great.

Hubby and I have a bit of a system going now and sometimes having someone help out can make things more tricky. It is great just to share the fun and have an excellent day on the water.Smile

Tue, 2009-10-20 19:54

seems to me some skippers expect alot out of the crew, personally all i expect in common repsect on the boat, chipin for fuel, normally i just bring the bait, if they get asked to do something then do it.

i feel like im going out anyway so be fair, most times i still pull the sea anchor etc.

a couple of beers or bourbons dont go astray either

anchor wench

Tue, 2009-10-20 21:13

ha if i ordered my usual deckie to pull the anchor she'd just crack the shits and we;d sit there anchored all day(girlfriend). all i expect of deckies is offer to chip in on cost of fuel, bait and ice. i'll look after everything and they can offer to chip in.

Most of the guys i take fishing usually dont fish much at all, my best mate and fishing buddie has lived in karratha the last 3 years. i really enjoy taking newbies out and i do all the work, don't really care if i even wet a line i get more enjoyment outta taking someone out whos only ever caught herring or blowies and watchin em sh!t themselves wen the hook up their first ever 20kg sambo feels good for them and feels good for me to work hard to get em onto a fish they'll remember. I'm far from the type of person who orders people around on my boat but everyone always get a breif and commentary on wats going on and if i ask/tell for something to be done its to be done for the good of everyone on board not coz its my boat. always find wen everyone is havin fun and feels part of team the crap jobs get done the deckies volunteer with out having to be asked

just have fun and clear and stow the deck everytime we move is all i expect

catch is divided equall ALL TIMES this is made clear before people sign up don't like it wen one person catches 3 fish and one goes home empty handed, we fish as a team

only thing i hate! is cleaning and packing up bymyself

with me if we ask someone out on the boat its our choice , we were going anyway. if they want to chip in for the fuel and bait thats their choice and its good that they offer.as far as doing bits and pieces on the boat we all do our bit, if drifting we share pulling the sea anchor in depends on who is free , when anchoring i usually get the deckie to pull it in as it weighs around 40kg (lol) we have an anchor retriever and im driving anyway as far as clean up goes we all chip in and help.all up i dont expect much from a deckie apart from them having a good time on the water. i never say we will catch fish but we try

Tue, 2009-10-20 23:03

The other thing about having a deckie on board if something goes wrong you get a bump on the head there is somone else there that may save you from drowning.Went out the other day squidding with a deckie for some reason he caught jack where as I bagged out ended up giving him all the squid to take home as I can always go get some more have done this quite often with deckies.I bought the boat because I like fishing if somone else wants to come along dosnt worry me.Fished with a bloke years ago met him down the ramp and at the end of the day he worked out fuel costs for the boat and then wanted me to pitch in money for the fuel he spent on the car towing the boat down to the ramp needles to say never fished with him again.

Bloody Blighs some of you

best thing any skipper can do is set the rules straight away so lubbers like me don't get egg on their face. Damo 6230 is a prime example of a crummy host skipper. I have been out with him a few times and he does all the wrong things such as ignore me not keeping the boat straight when loading, making me get in when launching so only he gets to wet his feet in the 0c water and making me use his rigs and jigs because i've brought the wrong gear - bloody bully! If all skippers were this considerate i'd sell my old tinny and free load full time!

Fish wise is usually divided

Wed, 2009-10-21 09:09

Fish wise is usually divided up equally most times, depending on whats caught. If there is a feed of fish onboard and i have a nice fat KG in there too, he is all mine, and if a deckie catches a nice fat KG, its all his.

As for 'spending all the money on the boat' dont like that statement.

I bought a boat because i like spending time on the water with family and friends. Weather it be fishing, on the biscuits, cruise to rotto, or a bbq on the river, doesnt bother me.

I work in a pretty stressful environment at work, and being on the water takes me away from everything in my normal day to day life.

Usually if we are cruising, have bbq, all the non fishing activities, i will do all the work. Usually because its in calm waters, not in a rush, not under pressure to find fish for your deckies.

Paul Sorry mate, i dont agree with you on the 'must find fish for the deckies'. Obviously i try to, but sometimes they are just not on the chew. Its all about enjoying the day on the water. And usually you invite the deckies you choose because you enjoy having then onboard.

I think the best thing a deckie can do, is ASK if anything needs doing, or if any help is required.

My deckie

Wed, 2009-10-21 10:31

Does buggerall. I pack the boat, get the bait/ice, tie the rigs, pull the anchor and constantly get outfished. Help is only with taking some fish off, baiting (mostly own hooks), putting the boat in and retrieve. Washing the boat is my job.

Passes the occasional beer and snack.

Wouldnt have it any other way to have your loved one as your best fishing buddie (even though she beats me all the time).

Laughs at my plastics and lure fishing when she uses bait. Gets grumpy when I get a trout on the plackie though.

Only problem is she never want to leave until the fish stop bitting and up here it can be never, and thus I get tired!!!!!!!!

Wouldnt change my deckie, and If friends come along it is no problem at all to maKe them welcome and I still do all the things and dont require compensation, although usually offered in the form a beer etc. I would be there anyway and company is great.

Neels

Deckie

Wed, 2009-10-21 18:35

Yes the male counterpart is my deckie, however the reason he baits my hooks is that I have a condition (physical) not mental that prevents me from doing so.  Yes I catch all the fish and wait when he request live bait fish I even do that.  I am the one that brings home the tucker and my even my son comes to peruse the catch and instantly recognises that Yet again mum has done her job.

Oh you two sound like old fart amd me

Fri, 2009-10-23 17:59

can't look down in the boat, so old fart has to bait my hook and when I catch a fish he gets it off, rebaits and then says to me "are you down yet"  I pull in the sea anchor, but he has his routine of how he likes his boat cleaned (regardless of the deckie on the day)  Old fart fillets all the fish, our boat is a dry boat (as far as skipper) deckie's can drink beer or what ever but skipper doesn't (waits till he comes in and fillets fish with a nice cold beer)  Deckies if fishing with old fart split the fuel/fish, bait he always has plenty doesn't worry about that, we fish with winches so if deckie's fish with rods, stay out of old farts way, you get tangled with his line, duck or put ear plugs in.  I always make plenty of sandwichs/soft drinks/water if deckie or for deckie when fishing with old fart.  If deckie brings hand held GPS never fishes again with old fart.

For me

Wed, 2009-10-21 18:51

It's nice if the deckie at least asks to spilt the fuel costs plus a little more to cover oil, etc., offers to pay for bait, food, etc.  but I'm not going to ask...they'll get the point when not asked to go again.  As far as the anchor goes, everyone takes a turn until my electric is fixed.  For me I just enjoy the company. Took don't work this weekend and he definately outfished me the first half of our session...at the end of it we got a decent feed and hopefully he enjoyed a beautiful day on the ocean with us.  Cheers Ben

Ooo you have an electric

Wed, 2009-10-21 19:11

Ooo you have an electric can I come =000

No seriously, on my (shared) boat you will get told what, where and when with launches and retrieves but I do tend to run the anchor myself, depending on the deckie's familiarity with both myself, the boat and the ground.  OTOH I'm no gun fisher and always happy to  have some input from the deckie as well, I've only had the boat a year now I guess.

Because my boat is a bit weird (three owners), we run a kitty and all boat users pay $10 per person to the kitty and the boat is returned full of fuel. The individual skipper on the day has to arrange the fuel/bait/whatever split on the day with the users. We came up with this to try and spread the costs of the boat better across the people that use it.
