Deadly!
One of our cray boats was short of a decky today so i was skipper and my step bro took the decky work with myself also helping out. The crays are sh!t atm but i'm posting this becasue today my step bro nearly got a snapper lead and 2 big sets of gands in his head whilst the winch was spinning a hundred mile an hour ;)....;)
Yes i'm serious, comon, ppl ping cray pot spots....no worries....ppl fish cray pot spots no worries but DONT DO THE WORONG THING AND LEAVE 'YOUR GEAR/RIGS ON IT WITHOUT A "WARNING" TO THE SKIPPER/DECKY.........PLEASE!
Your options,
* Tie a rag to their floats
* tie a plastic bag to their foats
* tie up their floats in a knot if you cant do above
* BUT, the FREE tags offered by the fisheries (orange tag) and a cable tie is the best thing you can do ie attaching it to the rope & float section!
PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING, IF THE ROLES WERE REVERSED I'M SURE YOU'LL AGREE!
THANKS
Ryan

not funny!
I know at Tworocks they have the FREE tags at the launching ramp BUT ANYTHING as already mentioned will do. I was on the flybridge and i heard the winch spinning fast as per normal and then i heard...."ohh sh!t...F@*&ck"........too look down and see the rig and him nearly tangled after the winch was stoipped quickly....not funny at alll!

Last weekend I managed to
Last weekend I managed to pull something like 30-50m of braid off a craypot line which I imagine wouldnt be good on high speed machinery. Nothing on either end of the line though. Got some of my hooks got caught as well, but managed to pull the slack bit of the line up and get the hooks out. Normally didnt catch the ropes, but the drift was weird with currents and wind being differernt directions.
Luckily I havent lost any gear on craypots and I did know about tying some marker on them to let the guys know. What I want to know though is what do you do if its at say the mole where you cant swim out and tie something on. I suspect they are pulled in slower or by hand even though (seeing as tangled line is inevitiable there).

close in!
Close in pots are winched slowly, deeper water and really deep water has the winch running very fast....deadly!

Yes a common problem, have
Yes a common problem, have had many over the years come flying over ths side no fun .Was bad before the auto coiler we coiled by hand, you can on amagine the damage a hook would do at that speed.it only takes one minute to tie a marker or a knot in the rope

Salient Reminder
Glad your step-bro was ok Ryan!
A lot of people would no doubt be totally unaware of what's required and why on this issue - public education would help - perhaps an advertising campaign at the start of the season? A good topic that could have been included with the RST!

True that.....
That is right Colin, I wasn't aware of it. Now that you point it out Ryan it makes perfect sense but I had never thought of it.
I have never snagged up toa cray pot or line but it is good to know what to do just in case.
