Dead pinks 2

Washing up on shore now in front of my work. Just took this then. There gills look burnt. This one not that long dead. Thought it was seal. More washing up. This is not looking good for stocks at all. A good 12 plus kilo female in picture

 This is not good.

Wonder what is causing this? Is it affecting the edibility of crays?

It looks very burnt around dorsil fins, gills and mouth.

Is it in the sound? Appears to be concerning, might want to report to fisheries, or a governmental dept to test water quality.?

But in all seriousness this doesn't look good at all. Hopefully the fish stop turning up dead very soon and some test show what's going.

Notify Dof about finding dead snapper

Fri, 2015-11-20 21:54

May I suggest that F/W members send an Email to fisheries informing them of what is being found in the sound and ask them to undertake testing to ascertain the cause for these iconic fish losses in the breeding season.

Add to your Email that the urgency of their undertaking to solve this potentially devastating event cannot be overstated and you look forward to their testing results being published as soon as the cause for the deaths becomes clear.

If we don't notify the relevant authorities we cannot expect the problem/cause to be identified and hopefully neutralized.

Recfish Facebook:

'Recent Fish Deaths in Cockburn Sound! Recfishwest are following this up.
This was brought to our attention this morning. We have not had any contact with the Department of Fisheries at this stage.
This is extremely concerning particularly at a time when pink snapper are aggregating in the area for spawning.
Immediate action must be taken to find the source these mystery fish deaths.
The recreational fishing community are distressed at seeing large dead pink snapper and numerous other fish species washing up along shoreline around the sound.
Recfishwest understand that dead pink snapper and other fish were first been observed floating on the water throughout the sound 2days ago.
It is well known that Cockburn Sound is home to the largest know aggregations of pink snapper in the West Coast Bioregion and is critical for sustaining adequate breeding stocks throughout the region.
Recfishwest has had concerns about water quality issues in the Sound since the collapse of the crab fishery in 2010.
We know that invertebrates such as crabs and larval fish are more sensitive and vulnerable to pollution.
We understand samples have been collected by concerned fishers and provided to the authorities.
More to come.'

Maybe they've all been down to Fitzys elite boxing and coped the old 1 - 2 from Petermac and could never recover?

But on a serious note... This is bad news but with the amount of industry on its shores possibly an accident waiting to happen?

Such carnage

Sat, 2015-11-21 17:25

To have such a large effect it must be one hell of an event, I don't believe a minor spill incident could cause such damage to a wide variety of fish stocks. I'm not saying it is caused by a spill by some industry, however I wonder how long it will be before we see a great white washed up. Then the greenies will be up in arms until then their silence is deafening.

If not, and toxicity tests show nothing, maybe Burnz is on to it. Do the subs berth inside there? if someone fucked up and turned on a pinging sonar at full blast it would kill and disorient things for miles? Any ex-Navy on here with real knowledge?

Must be military related

Sun, 2015-11-22 11:40

I'm thinking it's military related. If it were industrial or environmental someone would be all over it by now.

Military can keep things quiet alot easier and just claim "national security" issues.

Was on the southern flats yesterday....

Sun, 2015-11-22 11:51

...with Eric (uluabuster), and saw several dead pinkies floating past, but the herring, pike and snook were out and about in their usual numbers, so figure that one out! Maybe because those types of fish tend to spend more time away from the bottom?

Real mystery this one...you'd think the authorities (whoever they may be) would at least have notified the public by now about a potential "dangerous to consume seafood" situation.

Fisheries Pathology

Sun, 2015-11-22 12:45

 Hello,

I have just spoken to Paul Hillier who is with the Fisheries Pathology section. They are unable to ascertain what is causing this at the moment due to the fish being collected are too far gone to give them any real knowledge about what is going on. He has asked that if any of you come accross a sick and still alive fish, call him ASAP on 0409 373 063 for collection. This would give them a much better chance of identifying the cause.

Cheers

Anyone seen any dolphins in the sound recently

Sun, 2015-11-22 15:39

Just a question has anyone seen any dolphins in the sound recently. If this event is killing everything from top to bottom in the water column then everything can be assumed to be at risk.

While they where kicking on surface.( lol) Imagine explaining to fisheries when they check you with pinks still kicking  on deck no thanks. Put on scuba gear they can get plenty of fresh samples. Prior to them bloating and floating. Someone can die months later still give cause of death. I may watch to much T.V:):):). Going under causeway this morn with nth East was vulgar.

Oh no! Crocodile Dundee has been in the sound again...

being serious here, this is not good. It may be like the Black Plague of fish, on the other post I saw they had been dead up north as well? Was thinking of heading up to yanchep during the week for a morning tailor fish, but I'm not risking anything by going fishing for food...

What species have been showing up dead other than Snapper?

With constant reports of Sharks in the sound I would have thought we would be seeing 10kg sharks washing up too.

Went out today Southern End of Cockburn Sound- nothing seen floating on surface.

At boat ramp this morning: Fisheries and Research divers.

Also snapper, cobbler, blowies washed up onto Palm Beach and Rockingham Beach this morning. Seen Rockingham Council tractor scooping up dead fish from foreshore.

Mon, 2015-11-23 17:11

Are the fish still dying? Or are all the dead ones from wednesday/thursday? The news last night showed long dead fish but not any fresh dead ones, if that makes sense. If there are no more fish dying and the dead ones are from last week does that rule out pollution? Or would the pollution have diluted and drifted off with the current, killing fish in the meantime. Must've been wide spread as the news showed a dead dhuie washed up.

Thanks for your email and your concerns re the Cockburn Sound Fish Kills. We were made aware of the incident on Saturday and we were out on the water yesterday to see for ourselves the extent of this incident.

We’ve contact the Department of Fisheries and are awaiting their findings of the kills.

We’re extremely concerned and simply whatever has caused this is just not good enough – we’re asking authorities for answers in terms of what’s being done to get to the bottom of this.

When we know more, all fishers will be notified. Watch this space.

Thanks again for your support

Kind Regards
