Jutt is that the big bay north of town? We flew over there in the Chopper on Monday and saw two boats working....

Are they chasing Prawns?

As far as im aware they drag the nets along the bottom and take everything, i may be wrong but have seen their nets on the ground at Pt Samson jetty, i have seen up to five boats working Nicol bay at once, and yes Timboon it is the bay next to town.

They are taking tonnes of

They are taking tonnes of blue crabs!

I reckon there should be an exclusion zone for trawlers, say, 20km from any public boat ramp.

Heaps of locals only have a small tinnie, and the Nickol Bay is their stomping ground.  A bit of a bitch having bloody great trawlers pushing you out of the way.

What they should do is let

Sat, 2014-08-02 14:43

What they should do is let all the keen shark fisherman who they banned from fishing up there 7 years ago back to keep fishing. Course the sharks are gonna increase if they ban shark fishing up there. As for the trawlers, well they've been doing as they please up there for a very long time. Just talk to a trawler deckie and ask what they catch. Youl be shocked! The fact the trawlers are owned by big companies with lots of money is what keeps them going, not the fact what they're doing is right.

I can't believe really, Where

Sat, 2014-08-02 20:55

I can't believe really, Where I grew up we had 5 trawlers that fished deep sea, 400+mtrs and deeper on the roughie but they have all gone now and I thought that majority of finfish trawlers were on the way out... I was sure they must have been Prawning... Sad if they not, I can kinda understand the prawn boats....

Nicol Bay fishery

Sat, 2014-08-02 21:51

From what I understand of that Nicol Bay fishery it runs bloody near up to Hedland on the inside of Geographe shoal and they are only allowed to take prawns and crabs. Same rules apply to their nets as those in Exmouth and Shark Bay, with gates to allow anything bigger than 100mm to 125mm? wide to escape

Fish trawlers are not allowed to work inside of either 100 metres or fathoms, not sure which but for up there its at least 70nm offshore

 Just gotta find some virgin

Sun, 2014-08-03 03:33

Just gotta find some virgin ground I can't remember the last time I had shark problems. Easyer said then done and to make it worse some dick head with a iPhone pings you while on your boat then next minute that spots full of sharks. Move on and burn another 150litres finding a new spot. Then keep sending photos of awsome fish to dick head with iPhone to annoy him and never take him again lol
