Daiwai exceler 1500 maintenance

Gday,

my reel is running a bit rough lately, I want to open it up and get some lube on there etc. Just wondering about the side plate, do i need to remove the rotor to get it off? I've taken all the other screws out but it appears to tuck up under the rotor and i don't wana try pry it out in case i break something.

Heres a schematic of the reel for reference http://www.reelschematic.com/schematics/Daiwa/Exceler/DAIWA%20SPINNING%20EXCELER%201500.pdf

Obviously new at this, cheers for any advice.

No...when the rotor is taken off there is a sideplate screw that will allow the side plate to come off.

Yep, the rotor needs to be

Yep, the rotor needs to be removed. The spool support bearing is usually retained by a clip that sits in a groove on the shaft. Take care to set all the parts in order as you take them off, clip, bearing, shims, spool ratchet etc. Remove the screw that holds the nut and undo the nut and the rotor will come off. Dont be tempted to lube the anti reverse bearing, if its clean, leave it! Other than that, grease is good for the internals, I grease mine up when I buy them, especially the crank bearings, I run a coat around the outside face of them to aid in water repellancy. Give the line roller some love too, does a bit of work and sees plenty of salt. Remove the retaining clip from the top of your spool and inspect the drag washers. Often there can be water in there from hosing (should only mist spray) and the water can cause pitting on the washers or the spool. I lap the washers  on a piece of wet and dry (wet) on some glass or something perfectly flat. Grease the felt washers and your drag should be smooth as I like to grease around the drag knob to aid in repelling water also. If your reel is notchy or not as smooth as you think it should be it can be either the gears or a bearing/s. To tell if it is one or the other, reel the reel in reverse, if it is smooth, Id say the gears are just worn, otherwise if it feel the same in reverse you may have a faulty bearing.
