Crays are gone.....
Submitted by BQ544 on Mon, 2008-12-29 14:23
Had a couple of dives out from Garden Island on the west side of the bank in 30 metres today.
All the crays have moved on except a few cackers and some big females with eggs.
Visibility wasn't to flash. But a good assortment of fish around.
Baldie's, 3 Dhuies, 2 big plump KG's, couple of Harlequin's, heaps of fox fish, breaksea, sambos and your normal reef fish.
Couple of dolphins on the top.
No sharks.....that I saw

what depth?
I am in 7 - 12meters off Burns beach and some days going home empty handed. I seen there are alot of pots in 15 to 20meters. might have to try out there.
Using fresh tuna heads every day seems to help get my bag limit.

Same depth & general
Same depth & general location between burns and inside of the 3 mile. Using timber slat pots, hard up against ledges on the edges of the reef. Got 5 keepers out of 12 caught yesterday. Didn't pull today - but guess the'll be on the move out soon.
As far as bait, I've been using spanish mackerel cutlets and Dolphinfish, that was getting a little old.

Thanks for the report BQ - encouraging news as thinking of headed out past the five later this week for a fish. Would be stoked if I can get onto any of what you mentioned (minus the dolphins of course...)

Yeah I think if you put the time in on the back of the bank, you could be rewarded. Look for the lower hard coral.

Cheers BQ. Sounds like you
Cheers BQ. Sounds like you mean the flatter stuff in the low 30's? Have only ever seen smaller patches here and there thus far - but still learning the ropes on this area. Any more guidance appreciated mate??

yeah I think the further
yeah I think the further south you go the later the molt and then the later the walk. We have some spots off whitehills that are still holding some, late molters and plus you will always have patches that will hold resident crays
