suggest

Thu, 2015-10-22 10:55

suggest u go out in dark. Sit a way off from yr pots on the pik and watch w a pair of binoculars. Or if you have a drone as ive suggested to a mate go out anchor up early launch yr drone from boat and hover ovr yr pots w camera fm 100m up. They wont even knw they r being watched!

Or get the dye tht fisheries use. Putin a bag half way up rope and when they pull it their boat will b covered in it and it doesnt come off!

Its potting off tge stones for me up here this season. No one will go where my pots r thrown andif by chance I catch em its a quick push and in the drink they go!!I

Personally this is why I

Thu, 2015-10-22 11:31

Personally this is why I don't drop my pots until the whites are running. At the moment there are way less pots in the water then when the whites are walking, so the chances of getting your pots pulled by someone else is much higher. Come end of November/start of December there are 50 times as many pots out there so the chances of getting yours pulled is much less then now.

Also I've found that on the few occasions that I'm pretty sure someone has pulled one of my pots it's been when my pots are by themselves away from everyone else's. When mine are close by to a heap of other pots they rarely get touched, as far as I can tell anyway.

Tell me more about this dye

Thu, 2015-10-22 13:31

I'd like to hear more about this dye business, it sounds like a very good way of identifying pot pulling sods.

fisheries

Thu, 2015-10-22 15:50

fisheries used to use it on commercial pots to identify illegal pot pulling that went on. Pot comes flying up on winch n the bag of dye explodes as it hit tge side of tipper n stains the boat instantly. Does not come off. Boat would come in with nowhere to hide!

Maybe give em a ring n see where you can obtain some from.

Very effective way of busting pot pullers especially ones w capstan on boat.

Or just ballast the shit outa the pot. No one will pull a pot that weighs 80-90kg. Too hard basket!

Thank you

Thu, 2015-10-22 15:58

Last year was a terrible year for me, I believe that my pots were being pulled as a few mates in roughly the same area where doing exceptionally good. I used the same bait dropped on the same country and did all sorts of things, the pots I was using were well weighted down and I don't think they would have moveing on the bottom.

Pots were on the gps mark when I pulled them next morning no sign of being moved no legs etc. in the pots just a felling I was second in line to pull them.

I don't think it will stop its like everything in life there's few dicks in what ever you do if the fell it necessary to pull our pots the lest they could do is put it back were it was , don't fuck with it and if they get a feed out of it bait it up so we can to.

Pullers

Thu, 2015-10-22 18:51

Already said but sure someone pulled 1 of ours from Mindarie.

Spoke to fisheries but nothing can be done till they get caught red handed.

Now who was it that had that gun????

Blame

Fri, 2015-10-23 06:59

Lot of the time its means there is no crays there or you have dropped your pots in the wrong place and its easy to go for the easy option and blame pot pullers for your lack of results. Drive past those who are catching well and see what they are doing and where they drop their pots in relation to the reef but DON'T drop your pots on top of theirs otherwise you will probably finish up with short ropes and no floats
Heavy pots is one of the answers to stop them walking across the bottom same goes for shorter ropes to stop the lateral drag on them in bigger swell.

Shorter ropes

Fri, 2015-10-23 09:13

Hey mate, could you elaborate on the length of the ropes, I thought more excess would be better, as long as it's not laying flat on top of the water and becoming a hazard.

What would the ideal rope length be for a pot in 20m's of water?

Length of rope

Fri, 2015-10-23 15:13

If your rope is too long the swell or waves will drag your pot along the bottom with a sideways pull , shorter ropes will drag your floats under before making your pot travel,

So in fifteen metres of water you should have no more than twenty metres of rope as an example. Beside slack rope on the surface give you a greater chance of being cut off by a passing boat

Yeah booby traping a pot won't help, if some prick does pull it and gets hurt, then your never going to see that pot again. At least normally they just take your crays and you get your pot back

Same crap every year

Stingrays main issue with slide lids on baskets. Not occys. They can snap and totally remove whole lid ( gone) even cable ties. Seen it underwater pro pots or not first few days they are light( still soaking . Strong currents millions of sea lice atm. If you really think your getting done phone fisheries with location. Over last week at ramp potters only getting few. Some divers doing very good. Crays are not moving. If you have been getting 10 to 20 a pot now nothing I would agree. My pots  getting jack s-- t. Dive no probs. Not having dig just my opinion . Good luck

Mon, 2015-10-26 07:19

 I agree Johnny,

Everyones confused thinking they should be getting crays now... the season starts 1 month earlier, so the bulk fo the crays are still over a month away... Crays dont change their rountine by much, just because the season opens 4 weeks earlier doesnt mean the crays will mault then walk 4 weeks early..

I will put mine in soon, but its full moon atm so crays will be way back in the reefs and not coming out.
