Cray bag limits
Submitted by fishy fingers on Wed, 2008-12-31 16:50
If I didn't know better I could legaly go out and catch a bag limit of 8 repeat 8 crays according to the brochure I got with my licence and still be within the rules and I think a judge would find it hard to prosecute someone if they did take 8. I think if fisheries are going to reduce bag limits as they have (and I dont have a problem with the new bag limits)sorry the fisheries minister, they should ensure the litterature sent out reflects the new rules, it's not like I renewed it before the announcement of the new bag limits I only did it a couple of days ago!

I got sent the new bag
When I got my license, I was sent the current regs, later and before the changes ones came in, I got sent a copy of those too. Here is a link to the document on their website; Lobsters in hot water - New Rules 2008/2009 (Nov 2008).
Unfortunately fisheries have absolutely no difficulty prosecuting people not up to date with the current regs. They do say its the fisher's job to be informed, not their to inform, but who knows you might get lucky with a judge and avoid the stiff penalties they hand out .

Bureaucracy!
They don't have the money/resources to provide you with the updated information when you apply for the licence, but they do have the money/resources to post it out to you a week or so later, by which time you may have been out fishing three or four times!
Not sure but most, if not all, of Fisheries' literature includes a disclaimer stating that the info provided was valid only at the time of printing, and, as till has stated, it's up to the fisher to be aware of the current regulations.
