*breakaway switch smoking and melting wires on Easy tow trailer*

Can anyone help me fault find my trailer brake issue. I have an easy tow Ali trailer with a dexter electric over hydraulic brake system on it. I have had the boat in storage and checked yesterday that the brake away cable was still activating the brakes which it was not. My first thought was a dead battery but after rechangering it was not different. I checked the connections in the breakaway and they had contact at which point I noticed the wires to the rear of the Esco break away system had heated up to the point of melting and smoking. I pulled the break away unit apart and tried manually connecting the metal tabs that activate the brakes. Obviously I got the same result.
Has anyone experienced this or know what I can do to fix it. I don't want to buy a new breakaway setup if the problem is elsewhere. Any help would be great!

Pump

Sun, 2022-01-16 15:21

Hey mate, pump will be seized from water intrusion. Brake fluid is hydroscopic which basically means it absorbs water. Usually we just change the pumps over as its not worth repairing them. I have got them working by giving the pump a couple of taps with the hammer.

Give me a PM if you get stuck, I can supply/install new if needed.

Hi and thankyou for the advice.

I used to be a fitter and turner so would like to have a go at repairing  it if possible. Can you tell me, do I need to drain fluid prior to inspecting the pump or are they separate cavities?

Any other advice would be great!
