Ir really depends what rock fishing it is, but I have been told by quite a few people that they prefer to use mono for rock fishing because of abrasion resistance,
Yer in a perfect world I like mono for rocks but most of my beach gear is braid and I use it off the rocks. I prefer braid on the beach, has less wind/wave resistance and you can feel the bites better, there isnt much else that can cause abrasion, I always tie a bout a 3-5m leader, with big fish you just have to learn to back the drag off a bit and not go as hard because no stretch can pull the hooks easier. Definately mono for trolling. I have a dedicated set up, have seen fish hit braid hard and instanly ping, or fish turn and swim towards the boat and you only need an inch of slack line. Otherwise 90 percent of my gear is loaded with braid.
This has got to be one of the most elementary fishing questions, hence an abundance of info is already out there.

For most of us
when talking main lines it quite simple. Mono for trolling, Braid for everything else.
Leaders are a whole other kettle of fish.

just tie a 5 meter mono shock leader on. maybe not for bill fish though.
mono for beach is good
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I use braid for everything
I use braid for everything (except beach fishing for tailor/mulloway), but i don't go trolling or rock fishing, which would be two exceptions.
If you can afford braid for any application besides rock/beach/trolling, you should get it, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
Much thinner diameter and zero stretch (high sensitivity), and it lasts a lot longer when exposed to the elements. The disadvantages are low
abrasion resistance, lower knot strength and it costs quite a bit more.
That's a simple summary of braid
