Braid for popping

Looking to spool up my saragosa 18000 for exmouth.  It will get used GT popping, trolling and jigging.  Since Ive had a good run with the tournament accudepth in 40lb for spinning up there im looking at the 85lb for this.  My popping rod is rated for 100lb but jigging only 80lb.

Question is how much capacity will I need for popping?.  The saragosa should fit the 300m spool of braid in plus some extra so Im thinking of getting some cheap 50lb braid to go behind it.

Thoughts?

300m is ample for popping GTs in my book.

Jerry Brown solid spectra line in 100lb is a good option

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

80 should be good

I suppose 80 is good enough. I use that for my GT and Tuna popping.

The Sara 18000 has a drag rated at 44lb, 80 line is more than what it can take.

What i think u'll need is a decent length of shock leader.

Very important as well, use the right knot for the backing, braid to leader connection.

My personal pref is the FG and PR, not once has it failed me.

On the other hand, you would not want to break your jig rod either.

Just got back from a week up

Just got back from a week up there we went out on onstrike charters had a ball. We spent about 5 hours popping for GT's on the outer reef and got stuff all.

I was using my Stella 20k paired with 60lb linesystem braid and 120lb jinkai flurocarbon leader connected with a 6" PR knot.

Managed to hook a 2.5m bronze whaler had drag set around 20 kg in anticipation for a GT strike and all my gear held up well with a few good runs from shark. The old boy got hit by a solid GT smoked him in about 3 seconds flat on a stella 18k.

I would suggest taking some light spin gear and throwing twisties at the mack tuna busting up bait balls there were plenty to be found and they are good fun on light gear we were using stradic 4000's. Once you get them to boat throw on the stella as a livebait and send it out in search of wahoo etc.

Regardless you will have a ball

Cheers

Im only planning to pop for a day form the boat- hopefully out at the murions, but will probably visit oysters a few arvos.   The rest of the time will be chasing spanglies/goldies/trout on lures and hopefully get into some solid fish on fly as well.  Only get one week up there this year but better than not going at all.
