braid backing

With summer and shark season coming im upgrading my heavy beach stuff. I cant remember the name of the braid I used as backing last time, but it was cheap and its getting old so its time to invest in some new stuff.

Im looking for a 350-500m spool of 50lb braid, since i dont fish much with braid except as backing I have no idea of the different brands and their qualities. I realise there are a heap of factors to consider and I have done a search but still looking for a bit more direction.

Casting wont be an issue as its backing, knot strenth is important (if this varies between brands?) as the join to the mono will be going through the eyes under pressure. Small diameter would be good to get more line on but really this has to be balanced with abrasion resistance, in case of heavy sea weed. Colour retention is not an issue lol, but I would like it to last a couple of years.

Budget is maybe 150 bucks, but flexible cuz i have no idea

Might be asking a lot, but im pretty lost on this decision so any help appreciated.

Cheers

ok just a note .. if your current braid backing is not out in the sun much or even leaving the spool often i wouldnt bother replacing it ... it should be fine. backing should never really get "old" .. its only a problem if you have run it over rocks and chaffed it badly .

anyway .. as a brand id use whiplash .. im using it as backing for my heavy gear. its cheap and very thin.

honsu sells it at oceanside tackle

thanks guys, whiplash is sounding good then.

Feral the old stuff has had a good run, only been off the spool 4 or 5 times, but that was around northern beaches with a heap of reef on some big rays and a shark that just left me for dead lol. Been spending a fair bit of money on the rest of my set up this year so wanna have confidence in my line.

cheers

yeh mate whiplash would be a pretty good bet. we've never had any problems with using it for both land based and boat fishing in the past and it has served us well :)

erm it depends on how much you wanna buy i guess. usually we buy them in those massive bulk spools (i think its 1970 yards or 1800m approx) for somewhere arund 250-275 bucks. I think the smaller spools come in 300 yards and 600 yards so it prob be best if you pop in to a place like oceanside and ask them what ur best bet would be.
