It all depends mate. What species, in what conditions, using what rig and technique. Even once you narrow that down there will still be debate. Horses for courses....
Yeah fully agree with ya mate but kind of looking for an all round rod for beach and rock fishing for tailor, pinkies etc. I will only be bait fishing so was kind of thinking of a sargus sg6000 loaded with 30lb braid on a Penn Prevail 11ft. What yas reckon?
I don't really know that gear but Penn does some good value stuff in that price bracket generally. Might look at the Penn Spinfisher reels as well, get them for a bargain at times under $100 and they are pretty solid proven reels. Heavy, but fishing bait they are ok, 750ssm would probably do you well. Maybe keep an eye out on here for a second hand rod as well, get some bargains at times. Not saying the Prevail wouldn't be good, just not familiar with it.
I bought a 9ft Prevail about 3 weeks ago for throwing slugs etc off the beach (with a 5000 stradic). So far it's been a beautiful rod to use. Super light and casts a twisty a mile.
If you're looking at a graphite rod I also have a Shimano Aerowave 13ft that I've now had for about 6 months, and while I'm no rod expert I am extremely happy with it.
Use a 12 foot rod and an 80 series reel. Make and model is up to you and your budget. Value for money, try a phflueger salt and a gladiator exoskeleton. Hope this helps.
Cheers David
+1. This is a pretty standard setup for bait fishing off the beach. I bought a pflueger salt 6000 and a 12ft ugly stick after I moved over here from over east 3 years ago and it's worked well for me since then.
I am looking at buying a rod and reel atm for the same purposes Stewart. I like the Daiwa Sensor Surf 1302hrs (13ft) fitted with a Shimano Stradic 8000FJ. 30-40lb line.
I strongly suggest you check these out - all the reviews I have read are awesome on the Sensor Surf and we all know that the Stradic is probably one of the best value for money reels getting around. This combo will allow you to get tailor, pinkies, mulloway, rays, sharks
I think you need to work out if you will be bait casting or bottom bashing, if both you may need a solid beach rod to handle the cast weights, but bait casting with a 12'beach rod and suitable reel can be hard work.
I have a Daiwa Surf Jigger 305 matched to a Sol 4000 for Bait or Lure casting, but also now have a 9' Prevail heavy Spin with a Shimano Rarenium 4000 that I use for lures so I can leave the other for bait work and they are both great.
If I'm bottom bashing with big lead, I use a 12' Ugly Stick and a Penn 650 Live Liner.
Not what you want to hear, but I'm not convinced one outfit will work for you unless you are built like the terminator and can cast and retrieve lures or baits all day with a big outfit.
