Beginners tale

So, the calm weather yesterday gave me an opportunity to get out and explore the sound a bit farther than normal. Being new to boat fishing, I'm still learning the ropes. Launched from Woodies.

What I discovered:

 - Anywhere on the lad side of garden island/carnac that I dropped bait (squid/mulie) was immediately taken by Trupeter.

 - Between the islands I was able to catch plenty of brown spotted and king wrasse pretty concistently. I kept 1 king; which tasted pretty good.

 - farther out beyond the islands and the bites dropped off. Some Wrasse but not a lot else.

I was hoping to find whiting; but no such luck with all the trumpeters.

So, my question is; in the areas I feel comfortable heading with my boat (inside the islands, round the back on a clear day); what species should I target this time of year? (e.g. is there any point going for snapper).

squid

if your after a feed, catching squid over the weedbanks is normally a never-fail.

easy, fun, and a fantastic feed, all close to the ramps. aim for 3-6m of clear, ribbon-weedy water.

Awesome you got out a bit

Awesome you got out a bit further during the good weather, it takes time to find the right patches for sure..

To the right of the second channel marker between the islands should have sand whiting, there's a good sand path there which you might show on your charts ?, or around Parmelia bank area..

Squiding is always worth a shot, first thing in the morning or later arvo are best times. In front of Carnac...other side of channel is worth a shot.

Snapper...Between the islands or inline with Yellow shark marker just outside is worth a shot, really need to target sun up / down for best chance with a good burley trail working just of the bottom. There's some good ground in there so Skippy and Herring wont be far away either with some burly.

I love this for searching my next session - https://webapp.navionics.com/#boating@12&key=rkbcEcbhaU

I fish the same areas I

I fish the same areas I haven't gone much past Garden or carnac yet, one day I will but as said above squidding is great around the islands and around Kwinana. My misses loves catching trumpeter and wrasse she always laughs at the look on my face when she is getting them we do sometimes find the king george though that's always a bonus.

32° 07.556 South

Very good whiting spot with the odd herring, squid and skippy.

Harding Rock – Cockburn Sound

The D9 – Cockburn Sound
32° 11.645 South
115° 44.524 East

Snapper breeding ground. Best from November to March. Also good for skippy and tarwhine. Fish for the future at this important spot.

Coventry Reef
32° 20.059 South
115° 38.259 East
6m depth
The first tell tale spot of the Autumn salmon run, you can also find big tailor, skippy, sambos, snapper and dhuies.

James Matthews Wreck
32.07.930 South
115.44.620 East
4m
This wreck is very close to Woodman Pt and can be either dead or a magnet for fish in season. The area is commonly hunted by large pink snapper during spring and rough weather when they come in close around the Woodman Pt area. Worth trying first if you’re chasing snapper in a blow as it’s only a short distance from shore. Other fish to be caught here include mulloway, skippy and herring

Inside the sound

Mon, 2020-02-10 14:23

 Weed banks = Squid

Sand hole aroundin the weed can hold KG Whiting (Dawn or Dusk in winter best)

Herring and Skippy around rockier ground (D9/Pinnicles ect)

Plenty of Gummies at night where it drops from shallow to deep water

Out side the sound all the School/Sand Whiting you want in 18mtrs behind GI.

Then next step is 5 Fathom bank.

After that out the the 35s and your in demersal territory.

Step by step....you'll work it out as you head out further.
