Bait Gathering Techniques

Here is a link to a very short movie of today's exploits. Thanks to Alan for showing me how its done, so that I could out fish him again(hehehe). Hopefully the link will work and you will be able to view the movie. I didn't think it was good enough or long enough to post up as a real fishwrecked movie. http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g268/AndyMac_2006/?action=view&current=Baitgathering.mp4 I hope you can be inspired to collect your own bait and perhaps record the event for others to share in the knowledge. So do you collect your own bait, if so how do you do it? What bait do you collect? Where do you get it from? When is the best time to do it?

Tips

Is that an actual squid jig Andy? Couldnt quite make it out. Any pointers you can give us from a successful morning or is it as simple as chuck it out and do a squid jig retrieve in jerking motion?

Occy Jigging Video tips

Wed, 2007-01-17 13:13

I sould have called the thread " Occy Jigging Video" as I would have got more hits given the current craze....see even Kasey L. was onto it in a flash. Maybe we can get a few shiny bits to add to the handline and bling it up like a real jigger does.

Anyway as for tips, all you need to remember is go on the lowest tide you can, sneek around because they are very sensitive and will see you coming.

Drop the jig in the rock pool about 6 inches away from the ledge and make sure the jig falls away from the ledge leaving the prongs facing where the occy is likely to be hiding. That way when he comes out to grab the jig he grabs the prongs and you lift him up and out in one smooth fluid motion.

The jig is an old weighted hard plastic sqiud jig. I used the white one and had 3 takes. Alan used the pink one and had one take. I guess the yozuri ones would work just as well if not better but with the forward weights I am not sure how they would settle in the rock pools???

Its good fun and a pleasant way to spend an hour first thing in the morning.

Cheers

I haven't tried before, so you were just dropping a squid jig into that little pool underneath the word bait in the above image in a sneaky fashion? I thought you were throwing them off the rocks and jigging them back, but now I'm onto you. How deep were the pools by the way and could you actually see the occy's or was it a bit of a, give it a go, then move onto the next pool?

Pools yes

Wed, 2007-01-17 14:05

Bit of both, you can see them sometimes and others you just try a likey looking ledge and bingo he crawls out and grabs the lure.

Depth from a foot up too 4 foot, varies with each pool and ledge.

I dare say the whole coast is littered by these little rock pools so there would be a few around if you are prepared to travel a bit.

The boys and I used to drop

Wed, 2007-01-17 15:39

The boys and I used to drop a couple of mullies into the shallow pools at low tide in Kalbarri then gidgie the occys when they come out. Just as the suns going down is the best time to get them. I must say though Ive never really caught much on occy myself. But I no the boys in Kalbarri swear by it.So that must say something.

Shackle

Wed, 2007-01-17 15:51

We found a steel shackle embedded in the reef that someone must use to tie off occy pots or something. Those clay pipes that you see sometimes would be good as an occy pot if you could rig it the right way.

Mullet using a gerkin jar

Wed, 2007-01-17 18:12

I used to get Mullet in the salt creeks back home (South Aussie)with one of those huge Gerkin jars (the one as big as a footy).

Get the jar, put a rock in it, place some bread in it, place in the water just off the bank, with the opening facing the shore (rock stops it floating). Throw some small bits of bread around it. Sit or lay down on the bank as they sometimes they are timid. The little mullet come along, go in the jar for the big bread, start munchin on the bread, then you run in, they see you comin, head south only to meet the end of the jar, and wammo. Hand over the opening, and lift. Sometimes get 5 or more at a time!

Would probably work the same in lagoon situations

Cheers Jason

Pippy's down the beach.

Wed, 2007-01-17 21:37

Pippy's down the beach. Stick my feet into the sand and pick them up in the wash. Then catch whiting and herring from the beach. Use whiting and herring to catch squid and other fish. Then I have Whiting, squid, herring and yellowtail. Haven't bought bait in ages. A block of mulies every now and again for tailor.

You gotta be in it to win it
