The artificial reef plan is being considered by the City of Stirling.
A total of $50,000 has been set aside for the study’s first stage, which includes investigating construction of the reef.
Current suggestions are that the reef could be built off Brighton Beach. It would be within swimming distance of the shore and would cater for surfers and recreational fishers as well as tourists.

It will provide another shorebased target. It could also catch out some of those looney kite surfers that buzz you when you are fishing at Brighton.

Stirling Shire should spend money on a jetty at North Beach. Back in the days of old there was a long Jetty there.
Went and fished on the platform there the other morning but only room for 4 anglers. No toilets either and no lights working. That is the only fishing platform in the Stirling Shire. Bit sad.
they had in Mirrabooka recently after they cut back the local park. They could, or should, do both - and put a new boat ramp in.

Twenty years ago myself and a dozen others put 20,000 car tyres together in large pyramide shapes that the army later dumped at sea to form the artifical reef at Quindelup, i thought it was a fantastic use of tires that in those days went in landfills or where ever, at around that time they were talking about the above reef, 20 years later still nothing concrete.
I would like to see dozens of artifical reefs anywhere we need them up and down the coast , do it as work for the dole so labours free, tires are free and the army can barge them out to where we want them, good use for old tires anyway
I see i got rid of the dark letters, not sure how i got them or where they have gone now,,lol

Shorty I agree whole heartedy, I believe this is where the solution lies to solving a good part of the fish stock problem. Look after or create spawning grounds and the fish will flourish. The more artificial reefs the better. I am sure with constant changes in weather and tides the reefs (amongst other reasons) have deminshed and this solution allows us to aid nature and reverse some of these impacts. Whilst recreational fishing certainly has an impact it is not the only contributer to the problem. We need to diversify our efforts into a broader solution and the creation of these reef structures, I believe is on the right track.
as far as im aware tyre stores have to pay to dump their old tyres.... so why dont fishing clubs take them for free to make artificial reefs??? better still, why not fishwreck staff and members get together and get some of these tyres and get the tyre stores to put in to make artificial reefs out of their dead stock????? would be money better spent for all of the rec fisho's..... and surfers....etc
wouldn't be any different to sinking old ships for dive ventures....etc
and like shorty says "do it as work for the dole so labours free"
We were not the first to build artifical reefs , other states had already built plenty and they had worked very well, a delegation from South OZ came to the factory to check out the operation ,i was under the impression they were about to make one as well.
How we made them was lay 3 tires in a row and strap them,,then two on top of them them one on top of that, it looked like a triangle.
When we made 4 of these, one would be the base and we would stand the other 3 around as a pyramid shape, concrete was poured in the bottom tires for weight and we drilled holes to allow the trapped air out, the army loaded them onto landing barges and dropped them off at sea.
OH and we used industrial package strapping machines (handheld) took a few seconds to strap each tire together, it did not take long for banarcles and coral to hold the tires permantly together.
Why don't we hear much about them these days ?
Because a Greenie said "what effect do tires have on the ocean" ?
The goverment said we don't know and put it in the to hard basket ever since i believe.
The cottosloe/brighton plan had money and studies thrown at it over 20 years ago to see if it would be viable, it was not going to use tires but, they were planning on another way,,it was mainly intending to be for surfers not fishos.

that tyre reef of quindalup area was and is a top idea, a few more through the geograph bay area would be great especially considering its pretty falt and barren, as someone else said, it costs $10 per tyre to get dumped, atleast they would go to good use and not fill up land fills, a win win situation imo

They have a habit of stuffing up good ideas. In all reality we would all be driving hydrogen powered cars. Hence, a big cut in pollution. But the greenies and the Nibmys don't like the idea of having hydrogen refilling stations in cities.
Renewable energy. Lets promote biofuels. Great, now people are planting biofuels crops instead of food crops. Now we have a food crisis.
Let's make sure that the gas and oil pipelines coming to Varanus Island are all together so that the local flora and fauna aren't affected. Boom, instead of one small pipeline blowing out, a whole string of pipes are damaged, which in turns affects the gas processing plant.

swimers, fishers and tourists
Yeah, the fishers would catch the surfers whilst the tourists would be entertained

What's the point?
50k set aside so you cant fish it for four vmonths of the year, bloody brilliant idea!!
How bout they spend the 50k on research into rec angler impact on demersal fish stocks, then leave out the smoke and mirrors in the report?
WAFTAM!!!! IMHO!!

Considering the amount of
Considering the amount of reef off Brighton already I would say that it would be purely for surfing.
What, like the million dollars spent on a reef in Cottelsoe that only breaks five times a year?
Theres a mighty lot of money wasted in this country on political carrots.
Angling tourism is worth $10 billion to the Australian economy - 90000 jobs; more than any sport; spread the word
