anchor rope

just out of curiosity how many meters of anchor rope should fit on a 6.7m fibreglass whitley as we are being told 50m is the most we would be able to fit thanks for any advice

Not sure about your exact boat model, but have you looked into Dyneema or Spectra rope?

They are much thinner for the equivalent breaking strength. You might get away with a 4mm or 6mm rope and then be able to fit a much longer length in.

It does cost a lot more than standard rope though.

Is this going on a drum winch or a windlass or just hand pulled?

Rope length.

I have 80m rope + 8m Chain on 5.1 quintrex, and can hold in 35m of water that is relatively calm.

Rope is 8mm DB Nylon. that came with the Lonestar winch.

Normaly would run at least a 3:1 ratio or more depending on how rough it is.

think you can only go with 1/2' rope on that winch, so you can only get what fits in the anchor / rope well, unless you store the extra somewhere else.

dealing with a cockhead doesnt make it any easier but i think you may be right as we had rope that came with the boat and it frayed and jammed up then snapped on the third trip rope was meant to be brand new .

as far as length of rope

Wed, 2017-07-05 14:38

as far as length of rope goes. it depends on what depth your going to anchor in . i was told years ago to go 3 x the depth in meters. eg 30 mtrs of water you need 90 mtrs of rope.depending on wind and current as to how much rope your putting out as the anchor will not go straight down and you need the chain to rest on the bottom to reduce the chance of the anchor dragging. as far as chain goes the length of your boat match it with chain.

hope this helps

Rope

Wed, 2017-07-05 16:19

With a boat that size I wouldn't be fitting anything less than 12mm diameter rope, ok it might cost a bit more but when things turn pear shape and your survival may depend on it you have a better than even chance of it not snapping like thinner ones.

As Russ stated above, capacity depends on where you choose to anchor, remembering that you need a minimum of 3 times the depth of rope to anchor and double that if conditions are bad

Rope drop

Wed, 2017-07-05 17:06

I have the same winch on a 6m Cruisecraft. I can store 100m rope in the anchor well but when retrieving in deep water need to push the rope coil to the side after 30m's so there is sufficient drop for the remaining rope.

just dhu it's picture

200 mts

Thu, 2017-07-06 06:12

travis.  Find a good rope supplier , i use to buy 10 or 12 mm for that size boat , a supplier will have two hundred mt coils and cost less than buying it pre cut .  I then cut in half and use a 100 mt length and have spare 100 mts which always can be joined with a shackle if needed     My self i would always carry 400 mts as above just incase things go bad

 G'day

As Walfootrot said there is a specific rope and chain to use with those gypsy type devices. There's 2 different models in the link you posted with 2 different size rope and chain, make sure you get the right one for yours.  I had a 600f and from memory they recommended 3 strand nylon.

My understanding is that the units supplied for aus are fitted with a gypsy to suit metric ie 12mm rope and 6mm short link chain for the smaller of the 2

Apologies if you already know this, it wasn't your question

 Cool

I found the Lewmar a real quality piece of gear but my decky (mostly the mrs) didn't enjoy the ritual of having to push the rope and chain aside to keep enough space for incomeing rope/chain.  You need a fair bit of fall to avoid it heaping up and halting the process.  I only had a small space in the boat I had at the time (savage tasman 5.2) .   Then the majority of my fishing was in waters up to 50ft and kept enough rope in the anchor well for that but had extra length available which I fed in under one of the seats before filling the anchor well.   You will find that you'll get some foul ups in the gypsy, just make sure you have clear communication when clearing as potentially there could be a nasty hand injury.

Cheers

yeah same thing the missus hates it aswell but in a 6-7m boat we should be able to hold more then 50m of rope i just think that the boat yard is lazy
