Albany landbased Fishing

 Hi All,

I'm heading to Albany for the Easter break from Melbourne. Planning to hit the rocks, beaches and piers within an hour drive of Albany just not sure what to expect and what sort of rods/gear to take.

So far taking 2 surf rods and 2 other heavier spin outfits. Does anyone have a rough idea of where to start, what species are around at the moment and how to get onto them?

Thanks in advance.

Stefan.

Use the search bar left of screen. you will find many reports and info from the question you're asking. No different fishing Albany to anywhere else along southern coastline. Enjoy the area but be very cautious when fishing from the rocks.

You should come across a west Australian salmon or 2. A brilliant place is the Salmon Holes and is quite close to town in Albany. However you will want to get there early because heaps of people go there. Also there have been deaths along the south coast including 2 people dying last salmon season at the salmon holes because it was an extremely rough day and they were swept off the rocks.

try Cheynes beach, I think it is about 2 hours east of Albany but it is another great spot for salmon.

they will take every lure that you have so take some that will cast a mile because as long as the lure is in the school, chances are that you will get a hookup. A large halco twisty is really good and richter plugs in 3 or 4oz sizes are also really productive.

i think the salmon will be your main target at this time of the year. As you might know Australian salmon and western Australian salmon are slightly different. The west Australian salmon grow to about 8kg at the most but people are really happy to land a 5-6kg one, about 3-4kg is a common size. These are much bigger than the normal Australian salmon that you encounter in the eastern states.

thanks,

lachie
