I have a 680 patriot also. Had exactly the same trouble.

Do a search and you will see most of my posts pop up.

I built a wet box and put it in the hull. I used the same transom mount transducer and it worked a treat.

Had nice clear eadings on a reasonably calm day up to 30 knots and it didnt seem to lose much power shooting through the hull either. Have fished out to 200m with it.

i reckong half of the trouble with that transducer is the gap between the front of it and the transom. Seems to be alot of space for turbulance to build up before washing over the face of the transducer.
