Advice needed - fishing the Swan/Canning

Hi all,

Despite baby being on the way, being the scoundrel I am, I've schemed a plan that will guarantee me some more fishing hours while the sun is still shining. A family picnic on the swan, friends and kids all welcome is just the ticket. All I need to do is find a great spot that has a playground and a nice patch of grass.

Hoping for a bit of a catch and release session for some bream and maybe flathead - depending on the spot - probably using some soft plastics or hb lures so the girls can have a bash without worrying about getting fish fingers.

Looking on the map, I'm thinking one of three spots:

- Canning River around Shelley, the reserve where there is a small jetty.

- Swan River, reserve opposite Ascot (near Garret Rd bridge).

- Swan River, Cracknell Park, near Gt Eastern & Polly Farmer intersection.

Wandering if anyone can make a recommendation on the three spots - also whether to expect anything other than bream that far up the Swan or flathead in that stretch of the Canning?

Thanks,

Buschy

Hey Buschy,
The Garrett Road Bridge area is a good place for both family and fishing.

Under the bridge cast down tide of the sets of pylons, as deep/far as possible some people cast over the fence/rail so the can plop just inside.
With this fish a small bean sinker stopping at a swivel then use whole river prawns or worms.
I saw i guy pull 2x 25cm and 1x 37 cm on sunday this method.

Lures the only ones you could use are small soft plastics, which can produce bream but 3 weeks ago my mate caught a 30 cm flatty. Hrad bodies arent as effective and too much risk of snagging em.

Also 150 metres upstream of the bridge is a small jetty always worth a drop of a lightly weight prawn. As sometime schools of 30 bream jsut sit under em.
2 weeks ago me and my mate pulled 12 bream in half an hour form that jetty, biggest 32cm and the average 27.
But only try for 10 mins as if you get no takes it means there not schooling under it.

Thanks for the advice - I know there is a wealth of info available on technique and baits on the site too so will do some searching.

Hopefully we will end up at Garrett Rd then as I have heard good things on this site. As for the other spots a bit of trial and error over the coming months to see where they hole up!
