2 piece rod stuck together.. Struggle street

So a while ago I bought a 2 piece uglystick 8ft rod mainly for soaking bigger baits while fishing on the beach for bread and butter species.. Anyway, have used it maybe 10 times and last time I went to pack up i couldn't get the the 2 pieces apart. Have struggled away trying to twist and pull but no luck. Even tried ice on the join after some advice from Campbells but no joy.. Any one have any handy hints?? Btw somehow when initially trying to get it out I did twist it slightly so the guides don't match up.. So can't even use it as a 1 piece :(

cheers,

Brett

Happened to my son with his nitro magnum butt... took him about two weeks to get it apart. I think he sprayed inox or crc around the joint.

Wrap some rubber (bike tube or similar) around each section of the blank. This makes the diameter larger, giving you more torque and will give extra grip to help twist it apart. Ensure you wrap the tube in opposite directions.

Heat expands, cold shrinks

Surely you would heat the bottom piece (that goes outside the top piece) whilst trying to ice the bottom piece ( contract it). At least I would think heating the outer piece would be better than icing it?

Ice

I have a massive freezer I chuck mine in for a few mins and they always come apart easy.. As far as I know ice or cold water makes things shrink...... I guess both end could shrink making it tighter but it's worked for me many times.. Although I'm nowadays tempted to glue 2 piece rods together and I have no need for a 2 piece rod..

Just a tip if yopu get it apart

When assembling always rub the male joint with your finger after first rubbing you finger on the side of your nose - Yes I know it sounds stupid but the natural body oils accumulate there and provide excellent lubrication for rod joints

put one side rod close to the joint behind the knees then squat down, the bent knees will hold it tight and use both arms to twist the other side of the rod in opp direction.

Never store your rod away jointed, always take it apart during storage to ensure they don't stick together.

99% of my rods are butt joint and I never have this problem

What i use is duct tape, the grey stuff used for flexible air con tubing. Wrap it around and around the blank to make a grip. This helps get more purchase on grabbing the blank firmly by hand. Other suggestions as far as hot water and lubricants are good suggestions to use as well as this tip.

Hope this helps, it works for me.

Vacuum

Wed, 2014-08-20 14:27

Make sure there is a small hole in the end of the rod but to allow the pressure to equalize between the inside and outside of the blank. This prevents a vacuum being created inside the blank . Had this problem on my t-curve and even the guys at bluewater exmouth couldn't get it apart after trying the freezer trick. Made a small hole and it seperated easily.

Then Rubber, whether glove or the tube to grip. Dont try and pull apart, try a twisting motion first to break the "lock". If this doesnt work Hairdryer to female but end, ice to male tip end and repeat the rubber grip. 2 Stilson's over rubber to protect the gelcoat etc also worth it. Otherwise a one piece with poorly lined up guides!!!!
