Planning a 3 month trip mandurah to cape leveque

Hi all well we have decided its time for a trip it will most likely be somewhere between april-july next year so starting to plan the trip now we will either be towing a jayco swan/eagle or an expanda not limited to jayco just examples We are currently looking now budget is upto 26k and will be an offroad model we will have a dinghy on the roof of the car/camper as we plan to fish a fair bit along the way.

We will have a little one with us she will be 2.5yrs old by then.

Im after opinions on where you think we should stop on the way up and back i dont really want to travel more then 400kms a day and am happy to travel 50kms if the next spot is worth it.

We will be setup fully self sufficient and only want to stop in caravan parks on the odd occasion when we need to/want to stop in major towns like coral bay dampier broome.

We havent been any further north then exmouth so have no idea what to expect up that way.

Thanks in advance.

Exmouth Perth Road trip from Darwin

Well I am back home in Darwin....

Over the new years break I had a bit of time off work and thought... what the hell I'll  go for a drive with my dog.

We braved the cyclones in the north of Australia. .. with only the one floodway that I did not see at full noise and low light...... crapped my pants but held the wheel.. and tried to guess what colour the airbags were,  and if I was going to take out the culvert.

With  the storms about from Darwin to Broome, the Kimberley should have a cracker run off this year.

Well with no more misshaps, I made Exmouth in good time.... and boom... WA... windy always.

For the short period of time I was there, it blew its ring out.... gulf side was a mess and the west side was milk coffee brown..

Surprisingly Oysters was clear as, but tide times were not that favorable. .. but your on holidays so you make the most of it.

A mate drove up from Perth to meet me as well as some facebook friends that were also in Exxy, so with the bad weather...

(as pictured boats in the sanctuary zones... gives an idea on how rough it was out wide)

I made the most of it as I had new lures to swim and test and report  on.

Only one day we had with no wind... GTs in the middle of the day chasing and smashing lures without  a single solid hook up.

We were sight casting lures to packs of mid sized GT and monster loners with schools of big Barracuda coming through. .. was great fun.

And the very next day.... more wind... more than what I would like and talking to my mate we pulled up stumps and I continuedthe trip to perth to get some jigging in.

Well turned out it was blowing there too.... trip was looking  a bit grim , but another mate asked if I had targeted whiting before with lures...

" hell no... I use a cast net up north and use them for bait "

So I spent the day driving down south to Mandurah chasing whiting and crab,

I had an awesome time on the 2kg gear, and had no idea whiting were so aggressive,  we kept a few and some crabs to cook up .

One of your Local Tackle Shops gave me a rod to test and gladly took it north time to Lancelin to have a play off the jetty there... again the wind, I just couldn't get away from it.

But the trip was to test gear and have a break which was basically achieved with some cooking with the lads thrown in.

Sorry no GTs this trip but enjoy  the pics

Fishing from Tantabiddi ramp/Yardie Homestead

Wildcats game/trip to Rotto

Hooked up the boat yesterday and dragged it to Perth for our annual Rotto/skyshow trip.

The boys were given Wild Cats tickets for last night, best finish to a game I can remember!

2 points down and a foul at 0.0 time left. 3 shots, missed one to draw and 5.00 extra time where it seesawed to a WC win.

My boys were hoarse from screaming, 1 went ass up from standing on the seat back.

Anyone else there?

Cant get pics up on mobile

Driving to Townsville

Hello All,

This may be a bit of a stretch, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever towed a boat along the northern coast to Townsville, and could provide any advice. I'm heading to Townsville for work at the end of the month, and I've opted to drive there so I can bring my boat with me, rather than flying. I'm planning on heading along the coast, so I can fish as I go, I've done the north west before, and a bit of the NT, but I'm not so sure about after Katherine.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get from Katherine to Townsville? Google suggests a route which goes via Barkly highway and Flinders highway, heading a couple of hundred k's south down to Warumungu, then pretty much straight east heading through Mount Isa, etc... I had really preferred the option of sticking to the coast, and then if weather was good, and I came across a good spot, I could get out for a fish, but from what I can see, the coastal road heading through the gulf of Carpenteria is unsealed. I'm in a 75 series landcruiser ute, all loaded up with camping gear and whatnot (thirsty and slow at the best of times) towing a 5.5 metre, 1.5 tonne boat.

If I were just going in my ute, I'd feel ok to tackle some harder tracks, but I'm less enthusiastic about it when I'm pulling the boat. Given that I'll be heading up pretty much dead in the middle of the wet season, can anyone advise if there are any decent roads along the coast through that region? I'd appreciate any input anyone had.

Warroora Station

Hi FW members Googling boat launching at Warroora Station and not finding much to confince me to take my 5.3m trail craft there...have a tinny I can drag there but would prefer the trailcraft, has anyone been there and can shed some light on boat launch options please? Appreciated, cheers

Cocos Island

Hi Everyone

Just wondering if anyone could give me some info on Cocos Island?  My family are heading there in November and I'm just wondering if there are fishing supplies available to hire or do I have to take some gear?

It's more a family holiday not a fishing holiday but would love to get out and have a good days fishing.

I've got some mixed info so not sure if I should take some gear or not?

Cheers,

Chris

Quick spin to the islands-added a couple of video links

Took my two boys out for a run to the islands this week as their school is closed for an extra week.
They hadnt been out there since April I think so were pretty keen.
Left tuesday arvo, back this afternoon.

First fish up, dhuie

Wednesday was a cracker day, we decided to play with the plastics, with Cam giving it a red hot go.
Unfortunately the fish were quiet in the morning but we got onto a hot patch of-charlie courts

The boys had a blast though, probably caught and released 20 or 30 in shallow water on plastics

There were heaps of mackies around, and we chased a couple of schools but they just wouldnt touch our lures or a floating bait, even when we could see them schooled under the boat...
Change of plan later and headed out a little deeper and tryed drifting unweighted mulies down to pinkies which got our bag in about an hour plus a few lost off the hook and to sharks, boys loved it and gave them a good work out

Forecast for the next day was a bit average, NW 20-25 going round to SW, not much good for fishing but we can handle that.
That night though, woke up at 1am, solid 30 knots NW and rain so had to wake the young bloke up and we moved out from where we were to a mooring, normally sheltered but a bit choppy with the high tide letting chop over the reef.

Next day was quite crappy so we sat out the morning, the boys watching the little flatscreen TV in the cabin while the rain poured down.
I could hear hysterical laughter in there, stuck my head in and theyd found all the old Abrolhos and Coral Bay fishing vids on my hard drive and we watched them for a bit of nostalgia.

After the rain dropped off, we were watching big schools of pelagics and birds working so the boys wouldnt leave it alone until we headed out for a look and a go.
There were schools of tuna and small macks together absolutely boiling, but STILL couldnt get them on a hook.
At one patch there was about 10 sharks mowing thru the fish in an area of about 5 meters by 5.

Friday the weather had cleared up a little, so a big cook up of bacon eggs and baked beans on the little camp stove to kick the lads along

and departed with a 15 knot SW behind us, which after 15 minutes morphed into a 20-25 knot ESE
Swell was about 4 meters, which was no bother, we still made 15-18 knots and I stuck Cam on the wheel for the last 1/2 hrs to get a bit of a feel for surfing

At the ramp, Fisheries were waiting which was a bit of a suprise as there was no activity given the weather.
Went through us, no probs and I had all the notifications, licences and permissions lined up for them.
Started querying how many did you catch first day, did you catch any today etc and the easiest answer is cant recall, rather than risk being tripped up by trick questions.
Also the reason I dont like them to talk to the kids sadly.
Well within limits with about 10 fish, and they were polite and very cordial as it should be on both sides.

Trip over bar the scrubbing!
If I could work out how to embed a video from photobucket Id chuck some up but after 5 years here I still cant work it out...
Still unable to work out how to get a preview to show, even with help from Adam

Fishing In Japan

Yes I am in Japan having a fish.

Done the tackle shop thing as well as smashing all the food and beer.

I planned  some shore fishing  over here but there has been a lot of rain and wind so had to cancel my landbased  plans .

However I did manage to get out on a boat called the Yamashomaru based in Ohara Port in Isumi City Chiba Prefecture. .... you can catch a train quite  easily to this place and you dont look like a crazy with your fishing rods and tackle bags on board.

The captain  Toru Yamaguchi  is famous in japan for Hiramasa ( yellow tail kings ) and has a history of boating some donkey fish.

He can also supply small guest house too which has a kitchen .... surfing is pretty big here too so you can go get some waves.

Great little tackle shop so I'm told but was closed on the day I was there... Apparently a lot of the hand made lure stuff... spewing.

The boat is big and we had about 22 punters on board and we all fish at the same time.... no bait only jigs, soft plastics,  and pencils. ... and belive it or not minimal tangles I was involved in one for the whole day.

Main difference was the Japanese cast their jigs out about  30/ 40m inabout 27 to 35m deep water  then jig back in fast style short stroke, and the rods about  7 foot long and reels were in the Saltiga 4500 size and up to 14000 stella was used with pe 3 line class and leaders of 40 to 60 lbs

Jigs about 150/ 200g and long.... the current  really  pumps here.

Note there is no overhand casting it's all underhand so you're not hooking anyone in the back of the head  so get some practice in cause it ain't  easy when you are shoulder to shoulder trying to get some distance  to keep your jig in the water longer.

The majority are small in tue 60 to 90cm mark on my day with the sounder  showing the presence of larger fish,

A fair few fish were released  some so fast that photos  were hard to get

But I had a good time and even as the only tourist on board they welcomed  me as one of them. ... fishing....one language  the world over.

Japan Tackle Shops

 Well I am in Japan.....

I thought I would share some pics of the Joshsuya jumbo tackle shop located near the Shibuya train station. .. over the walkway bridge that crosses the road and you are there.. 50m .

This is the 3 floor one .... first floor casting gear fly...popping... lure... and landbased.

The second floor is bait fishing. . So all the long soft tip rods you see with the electric reels that bend 90 degrees  down into the water.

The third ( no pics ) is the clothing floor for fly fishing, rock fishing,  and boat fishing dry and wet weather gear.

Berry tackle is 4 doors up the hill on the same block ( 50m walk ) on the 3rd floor of the tennis sports store.... no pics in this post but mainly all bass gear .

Sansui 1 and 2 are a long ish walk around the corner past the railway  station  japan's or Tokyo oldest tackle shop  ... again no pics in this post.

Joshsuya is the easiest to find

Enjoy the pics

Note I am sorry everything is behind glass or in their packaging. ... the fluro lights were horrible

Ningaloo station

 hey guys

last minute opportunity to head up to Ningaloo station to meet up with my parents...we are   leaving Sunday for a week going to be taking a off-road camper to keep the Mrs and 6month old baby in some  sort of comfort... Was wondering if it's worth chucking my  old tinny on the roof of camper  and fish inside the reef...any info  or tips will be much appreciated... it's the Mrs 1st time doing any remote camping/fishing,so would love to get her onto  any sort of decent fish to get her more  keen on fishing

Turtle Bay Dirk Hartog

I know there is a lot of info here about fishing around Shark Bay but haven't found much on Turtle Bay.

If anyone can give me some advice like fishing the area, travel time from Denham, best sea conditions ect... That would be great! Ive never been there but have a capable boat to get out there. I hear the fishing is unreal.

Any other advice on other places to try my luck would be very much appreciated.

Were heading up in a few weeks for a week of fishing with the boys. Never fished the place with a boat. Can't wait!

Thanks in advance!

Luke

Will be taking heaps of photos to share on return

Kalbarri Diving

 Hi All,

we're heading to Kalbarri in July holidays.

I was considering takign the dive gear. Is there any spots to do a shore dive in Kalbarri?

What about land based fishing?

Im not sure the missus is keen on me taking the boat, hence the landbased questions.

Thanks

Abrolhos, solo

last week decided that since I hadnt been to the islands for a couple of weeks, I deserved a trip over.
Became a bit of a headache lining up someone to go with, a mate had to go away urgently last minute-about 7 or 8 txts to different people and just thought fuck it, just go.
What I forgot though, was to take selfie lessons from my kids, I struggle to take pics when others are there let alone by myself.

Friends were working at the islands, but then the night before they pulled out as the cray price dropped also.
Bugger it, already loaded up-hit the road into a 4 meter swell.

Contrary to what some comments on here seem to say, only ONE thing makes a shitty ride and that is wind.
Swell, rain, cloud etc do nothing without wind in deep water
Beautiful ride over, quick chuck of the line for cray bait (charlie courts) and chuck the pots in.
Decided on this trip, that without the pressure of having to put someone else on fish Id experiment with different stuff especially the soft plastics Id been conned into buying years before.
First fish up, on bait, 9kg dhuie

Then another, another, another.

Moved, 3 more and gave up. All went down ok, quite shallow.
Next morning, moved a few mile and good sized pinky straight away, then fkn sharks losing rig after rig, move a mile same again.
Gave up and motored about 5 miles and dropped again.
On bait, just size pinkys hammering the bait but not big enough for a 30cm fillet.
Good time to try the plastics, straight down bang and on with the light rod in about 25 meters.

Small but size dhuie, went down, dropped again and something bigger

8-9kg dhuie, out with the release weight but it wouldnt pull him down so tied on a couple more 16 ounce sinkers and he started going down but slipped off.

Backed up to it but as I was reaching, smashed by a bronzie and bitten in half-fffaaarrrkkken waste, came back and ate the rest

Thoroughly pissed off went and pulled the pots for-nothing

Set them back elsewhere
Next few days a bit more fishing, dogged everywhere by sharks though I didnt travel far as 1 dhuie and 2 pinkies were my 10kg, plus ate a few pinks and crays

Mates turned up for a night to pull their pots in, then met crew on next island and helped with a bit of camp repairs
Trip became 5 days and thought I better head home and see whats happening there

Naturally, this coincided with a nor easter in the morning.
My number one tip, if it is NE in the morning it will almost ALWAYS drop of during the day but the shit sea state will hang around long after its glassy

While I never listen to ABC radio at home, I enjoy listening while over there and followed the events of Coral Bay Mandurah and Gnaraloo.
Very sad on all counts.
Knowing Coral Bay pretty well, I have my thoughts on what has happened there in light of what we know so far.
