Yanchep lagoon

hi everyone. I am really determined to catch my first tailor off the beach so on the weekend, gonna leave home at 4am and get to yanchep early at 5:30-6am. I'm going to make a lot of rigs to get around the reef and going to use ride with two poppers.

i have 4 questions.

first one is how many rigs should I make for tailor if I stay for about 4 hours?

is it worth having lighter rods out for herring and whiting etc.?

Is it worth working poppers like halco roosters and richter plugs, if so what colours are best?

and I need 2 lure combos and I only have 1. So for my made up lure rod I am using a 6ft 8-25lb rod which should suit but isn't made for surf and as for the reel I have a tom an GTX 3000 (don't know if that is like size 5000 in shimano but it has a 5.2:1 gear ratio and has only 190m of 15lb mono. I do have a lot of spare xtreme 25lb mono that I use for lure fishing with my stradic 5000FJ. It also has a long spool made for long casting but is an ancient reel about 20 years old I think. So should I leave the same line on it or should I spool it with 25lb for 1 fishing adventure then reload it with its old line again?

Hello Mate, My 2 cents

Wed, 2014-10-01 13:11

Hello Mate,
My 2 cents worth:
1. I normally have a couple of each type of standard rig available in case you get busted off
2. I think its worth taking a lighter rod but I find it difficult working both set ups at once, tend to find I miss bites that way. But always worth taking the lighter rod just in case you want to switch.
3. I have a 1oz white richter which I have coloured the end of it in red; yet to have any luck with it though.
Good luck and post your report when you are done. May be worth trying to find out about the weed situation also before you go.

Mate I would go to club cap

Wed, 2014-10-01 13:33

Mate I would go to club cap over the lagoon seen heaps more fish there. As above I would just stick to 1 rod. As for rigs either spot u won't loose many unless u cast it onto the exposed reef. Never tryed down there with poppers mate so can't comment on. That

Lachie., got to hand it to you, you are keen for that tailor.

Wed, 2014-10-01 15:58

Long way to travel for tailor specifically. Can be had much closer to home for you surely.

Saturday morning looking really pleasant conditions for a fish, but that in my experience means hard work finding the tailor. No breeze and No Swell forecast at this stage. Afternoon looks better ~4-6PM.

Sunday a different story, breezey all day. Would be much harder work but probably more successful for this species in particular.

Good Luck with the expedition.

Cheers,

D80

 I agree with the guys,Give

 I agree with the guys,

Give Club Capricorn a go, alot safer and easier to fish. Try fishing close to the rock wall that is there, there is a gutter in close which makes them easy to get on baits and even lures. For rigs i use a standard paternoster rig with a gang of 4 hooks which i make myself and a star sinker. As for lures metal from 30 to 50 grams work well, 1/2 to 1 ounce richter plugs, colours dont matter as all they see is the skipping lure.  Ive been trying out, (without any success so far) samiki hard body lures, heavily weighted stickbait and come at a reasonable price. For a lure combo you can get a  shimano catana 9ft matched with a shimano solstace 4000 from bcf for around $110. Ive used this combo for both bait and lure fishing and it works well for both.

Hope that helps

Hahahaahhaha yeah bud that's club cap. The bit you think is a gutter is a reef 100m or so offshore. You can fish both sides of the rock wall. Look for the gutter when u get there. Don't bother fishing lagoon
