The sand whiting commonly
The sand whiting commonly inhabits shallowsandy substrates in bays, estuaries and surf zones where it preys on polychaete worms, small crustaceans and bivalve molluscs.Reproduction in the species is variable over its range, generally spawning twice between September and April. Young fish inhabit shallow sand flats, both along the coast and well into the upper reaches of estuaries.

Small 20lb paternoster rig
Small 20lb paternoster rig with small long shank Gamkatsu's about 3-400mm apart. Coral prawn for bait, can't go wrong.

Roof
If you head outside and look up at the edge of the roof. that thingy that catches all the rain and sends it down the pipe is called a gutter, same as the one down the side of the road.

Mate
That is experience, but basically gutters are mobile so cant point you to one. They are formed where the sea moves the sand and create deeper areas of water. Get a pair of polirized glasses and then you will learn to spot them. Often you can see where waves wash up, and then down the beach. This washback area or rip drags sand with it and can form gutters. Often it just looks deep and has less wash than shallower areas. But you have to learn to spot them, or ask NICELY for experienced fishos to point them out to you along the beach. Try something like can you please point out how I spot a gutter. Dont ask can you help me find a gutter, because that means you want to fish there. You want to learn first. A few examples from google.
Hopes this helps.

Top advice!
Only thing I'd add would be go spotting from higher ground if you can, eg dunes or carparks/roads, and also much easier to spot formations early morning with the sun behind your back, rather than reflecting off the water in your face.
Good luck, highly underrated, fishing for sandies from the beach.
Cheers,
Joe

Running sinker
I'd go with the gutters as well but use a running ball sinker behind a swivel the about 400mm 5-10lb leader to a 10 or 8 long shank gamakatsu. Use sand worm for bait but only use a small amount and have the point and barb exposed. Cast to the back edge of the gutter and slowly retrieve. After a couple of casts you will find them. If the wind is at your back throw a small but steady amount of burley. If the wind is not favourable use a burley cage below your sinker and above your swivel. If there is no gutter see if you can find some weed beds . Cast beside them, not into them.
Try Trigg, beside the island. Early morning.
good luck, it takes practice and patience but pound for pound whiting are up there with the best fish.
