Submitted by Trevor68 on Mon, 2012-06-04 18:07
Hi everyone
I am after a good bait caster how ever I have only used one (my Abu Garcia revo inshore) i personaly prefere bait caster reels. my inshore can't cast the 3gram lures I use sometimes for bream fishing. Are there any bait casters that will do this? I do like the look of the mgx Is this a good reel?

For 3 gram threadline all the way. Baitcaster is too much a pita for this weight. I use a chronarch like katsy for barra fishing up north. they are better for this purpose.

The MGX might be the answer
The MGX might be the answer but 3gms is pretty light, Look up Tackle tour and check their review of the MGX, it'll give you a better idea of what your looking for, they were only getting about thirty feet (10 meters) out of it with a 1 quarter oz (about 7gms) bait.

Steez (and Pixys) are freshwater only mate being made of magnesium, Pixy is number one for casting light weights though, Shimano Core and the MGX reckon they've got it sealed for saltwater, maybe the Abu Revo Premier.

Hi.
Basically. over 6lb line. O\Heads (Proper reels)
Under 6lb line Eggbeaters.
Worked for me over the last 50 odd yrs.
Smal\light lures jigs, and expecially baits. Are more trouble than they worth in the lighter range.
No matter what reel you use. You still have to overcome the inertia of spool.
Egg beaters are a more practical\efficient way of getting them out there.
Much as I dislike them.

Calcutta 200B or 400B or TE
Depends on what your use is. Ive found the 400TE great for throwing some decent sized barra lures matched with a Ian Miller Raider 5-8kg. Ive got the 200B for casting some lighter ones but might switch to a smaller eggbeater for flicking the lighter lures with faster retrieve rates. Even with a fair bit of practice theres still a few cases of the birds nest when the wind comes up.
Cant fish from home...

Thanks for the reply everyone I have bought a revo mgx because I got I really really good price for one.
Im now looking at the samurai reaction range of rods mainly the 251 4-10lbs has anyone had any experience with these rods. Are they very sensitive? What are the blanks like?
Thanks

If you are going to spend
If you are going to spend that sort of money get a Loomis GLX 781 CBR, The Samurai blank is very parabolic (bends from tip right through to butt when loaded) resulting in extra strength but, in the lighter rods in my experience, loses a lot in sensitivity (almost glassy) and castability. I've owned and fished a lot of high end rods (Samurai, Steez, Shimano Cumulus, Carrot Stix and ST Croix Legends) and always go back to the GLX. Have had an NRX for about 6 weeks now but haven't really had the chance to test it, feels the goods though, obviously this is just my opinion but I have a wide variety of gear and know what I like.
Cheers, Daisy
