If you are chasing rays you are better off going for mono
It is far cheaper - and with a fair chance that the ray may run you over a reef or some rocks, the mono has far better abrasion resistance.

Talk to your tackle guy about that Eric
The only mono I have bought lately is leader and that would be way too expensive. You don't need to pay too much. Just get about 50 lb line in a reasonable brand. Just make sure you have a gaff if you are going to fish for rays off the rocks.

Any brand will do really
How big is your reel? That will determine how many metres you can put on it. But you would want at least a couple of hundred.

If your reel holds 300m of
If your reel holds 300m of 20lb, it would be 120m of 50lb. But they often use crap mono as a base line, so if you used platypus low stretch, it'd be closer to 160m. Might start getting closer to 200m if you used platinum.
(thats all assuming that your reel brand uses a similar 'mono rating' as daiwa, and that platypus' stated diameters are accurate)
If fishing 50lb, just make sure your reel will handle it.

I think most spools would come in 250 or 300 m anyway

I use PENN Line
But that's just my preference. If you are chasing Rays I would keep the budget down as you will have plenty of need to replace line on a regular basis when using Mono. Steer clear of the really cheap stuff though.
I am gradually moving most of my gear to braid. I will keep my trolling gear as mono.

i still prefer braid over
i still prefer braid over mono even for rays, it gives a much more direct feel and i belive is more fun and can be good practice for when out on a boat, on my dedicated ray spool i have that cheap multi coloured stuff from K-mart, i think its Javis walker or something its pretty rank but it hasent let me down yet and at the same price as some of the mono lines mentioned you cant really go wrong. however if you do decide to go mono my favourites would be platypus lo-strech,

if you have acces to ebay,
if you have acces to ebay, go for the Pex Dyneema braid lines, that come in 500m spools, usually go for around $20 bucks, ive tested the 10 pound to 60 pound ones, and all i can say is that it is all value for money, ive used expensive braid before and personally its on par, on cast distance, abrasion resistance, and feel.
if you do choose to get them word of advice, moisten ur spool with water prior to casting, i found that this limits the chanceof wind knots and increases the cast distance.
ive used the 50lb line for rays, try to avoid the neon yellow ones as, the colouring from it tends to clog up on the reel line arm from big strikes, this usually happens on the first use, but as you tend to use it more this stops happening. the Ive had this rub on cliffs, rocks, but never lost a ray on it yet. if you do get snagged best thing to do is use ur shirt or a piece of cloth, reel the line in as tight it can get then just pull the line towards you, has saved me alot of line.
Dyneema in my opinon would fall between Mono and Braid, the cost of Mono with the performance of Braid. if you do go for it its on Ebay called PEX DYNEEMA BRAID ...DieHard

If you are looking for a definitive answer
You may be disappointed as I don't think you'll get one. I prefer mono for that style of fishing, others have expressed they think braid is better. Which is better is for you to digest and decide.
And you want to know how long? How long is a piece of string? And aside from that, what reel are you putting it on? What else do you use the reel for? Why do blue and yellow mix to make green?

id go mono diehard cos of the abrasion resistance, stretch and its also cheaper if u get spooled haha
which happens a lot in ray fishing
also, if ur going to run 50lb make sure your reel has a good drag

Just my opinion Diehard but I would definately go with
mono, especially if you are chasing them at Pinaroo.
1) You don't have to worry about feeling a bite when you are chasing rays. You will know when one takes your bait.
2) It is a lot cheaper to lose a 100 m of mono compared to 100 m of braid.
3) You have better abrasion protection. There are some rocks and reef off the beach at Pinaroo and a big ray could run you straight into it and bust you off.
4) Better stretch.
5) Less chance of having a serious braid burn if a big ray grabs your line and you have your fingers in the right place.

I would personally go with
I would personally go with 30lb, and you will get alot more of it. Its harder than you think to break 30lb especially with your drag set right. a 50lb line class might give you a bit of hurting on a big ray as you will have to hold the rod alot harder and pull alot more because of the tighter drag.
I second the platypus, i have lo stretch in pink and it works really well, very sensitive and makes my reels look sexy

i use a penn 950 loaded with
i use a penn 950 loaded with 80poound fins and use a wind on leader for sharks up nore works really nice caught a few rays down here aswell. most tackle stores have the line bulk and charge per the real cost me $50 to spool me 950 spinfisher. i use 10 meters of wind on 120pnd then if chasing sharks use wire trace from ther or is rays 100pnd leader is heeps... key is the leader part needs to be long
on another note flaten the barbs so if u do get busted the shark or ray can shake them and if u get the fish in its easy to get the hooks out.
