What *REEL* do you use - off shore & river
Submitted by Mainey on Mon, 2012-09-10 19:09
Just about to get a new reel for some deep water use, and would like same reel to be used in river or estury use too ( if realistic )
The reel will be used from a boat
Not after Sailfish, Marlin, huge Sharks or any record breaking pelagics
Just seeking a quality made, saltwater proof reel, suitable for boat use that won't break the bank either
I have a Finn-Nor 'Off shore' level wind that I love, but I want something just a bit smaller as a second choice reel

Fin Nor
Hey mate just curious on how much you paid for the Fin Nor lever wind?
The reason why I ask is because I baught 4 from the link below.... They are $149 each and BCF is selling them for almost double and so is tackleworld!!

Bought it earlier this year
Bought it earlier this year from a Fishing shop in Bunbury (at the back of Bunings) that was closing
the asking price was #399 I think, and I paid $240 about the second last day they were there
I think they are a terrific reel, I love it.

Perhaps wait for the new
Perhaps wait for the new Spinfisher to come out. It's a sealed reel so fits what you want and will not break the bank like a lot of other waterproof reels.

I have a shimano seido reel
I have a shimano seido reel matched to a Catana rod. 20lb braid and it's great for a wide variety of fish. Rod and reel cost under $200 from an Aussie based online store. I'd buy the same again.

It all depends on how deep
It all depends on how deep you want to fish and whether you want to use Bait or artificial? If using it for abit of demersal plastics/jigs than something like the Shimano Stradic 5000FJ will do the job nicely without breaking the bank or if you want to use it primarily for bait than something like the Pflueger Salt or Crank will do the job.
If after a small overhead reel perhaps something like the Avet SX would be suitable depending on your budget?

How deep ??.............
How deep ??
............. where the fish are, maybe only 40 Mt max, and where the Barra are in the tidal rivers up North
I do prefer the Overhead type reel
it M U S T be suitable for salt water
Reading the replies above it appears I won't be getting one reel to do both types of fishing
well you learn as you get the experience OR when you ask questions lol

Well if it's for offshore <
Well if it's for offshore < 40m and barra fishing then i'd personally go a 4000/5000 sized shimano, the model you go for depends on your budget. For mid range something like the stradic or sustain 4000/5000. Spool it up with 300m of 20lb braid and you're set.
Alternativley if you really want an overhead, maybe something like a Shimano Calcutta 400 would be suitable?

Hmm overhead eh? What about
Hmm overhead eh? What about a Daiwa Saltist in the 20 or 30 size? The red Hyper speeds would be good and not too expensive. Or a Torium.

Yer there nice hey. Otherwise I use my baitcaster in 40 meters of water fine and its suited perfect for barra work. Its an older model chronarch.
