What do you use? Line Weight, Hooks.

Hey guys.

As im just getting into boat fishing and another friend is getting a nice boat soon. Im wondering what weight line and size hooks you guys use for chasing the bottom dwellers, jews, baldies, snapper, and what ever else is down there. I am running 20lb (9.1kg from memory) Spider Wire which im LOVING over the FireLine. Wondering if this is heavy enough? Im also using 30lb Berkley Triline for leaders. How ever the Triline is alot thinner than most 30lb lines it is more around 20lb thickness in other brands. It is ment to be thin and the best you know how it goes blah blah blah. Also have Spider Wire 4lb on my flick rods and Spider Wire 15lb on my beach rod. FireLine is out the window for me. Spider Wire is alot nicer. Not knocking it, if FireLine is your favourite then so be it!

Thought we could chat about what line we all run? And what size hooks we are using for what?

Glenn...

I'm old school and run 30lb big game mono on all my Tyrnos 30's. 80-100lb leader. 9/0 big bait series for hooks.

20lb mainline will do the job

Thu, 2011-09-29 07:57

But I think most would say that its sporty. Im from Karratha and have 30lb and 50lb on my BB outfits. Hardly ever apart from squid use 4lb up here, you just get busted up, but tuna on this can be heaps off fun. I wouldnt BB with that though at all.

hope that helps

Spider Wire

OK. sell me on the spider wire.

I generally use Fireline, but am open to suggestions. What is it about the SpiderWire that you find better.

One downside i have found with Fireline is it is so thick for its rated weighting (which partly defeats the purpose of using braid!!). However, every single break test I have seen, it always breaks at OVER DOUBLE its rated strength. Which really means I can use 7lb instead of 14lb at the beach. Thus decreasing the thickness.

pembbo, spider wire is so

pembbo, spider wire is so thin and smooth its like silk, fire line is rough, makes more noise going through the eyes, Big W usually have it or try a tackle shop....check it out for yourself :) Spider Wire also seems thinner than Fire Line.....But Spider Wire will cut you if your not careful....

For snapper I usaully use

Thu, 2011-09-29 14:39

For snapper I usaully use 20lb braid/mono. As far as hooks go I use black magic 5/0 suicides or 6/0 circles, circles are now the hook of choice for me with snapper though.

Thanks Glenn087. I might give

Thanks Glenn087. I might give the spiderwire a go. I saw some the otherday and noticed it doesnt have a line diameter/thickness written on the box. I thought that probably meant it was really thick so they didnt want to say ont eh box.

If you rekon it is thinner than fireline, that is good enough for me. Will try it next time i need to add a topshot.

People use all sorts of different line classes for 'bottom dwellers' depending on what they're targetting. Anywhere from 8 - 150lb is commonly used off the boat...

20lb

Try and keep it nice and light. Thinner lines means more connection with the bottom due to less drag on the line. 20lb Viros for Snapper and 30lb Tuffline for for bigger species. 50lb Fins for serious skulldraging.

Also depends on the reel you will use IMO. Different reels feel better using certain line classes.
