Weekend Fishing - 10-11th Sept
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2005-09-09 14:16
Anybody going fishing this weekend?
Mixed reports from the weather bureau.. Tomorrow has relatively strong easterlies early and dying off in the afternoon with a decent 3mtr swell running..
Sunday - Ocean Outlook says 4-8 knt north easterlies picking up in the afternoon, and bom says strong 16-20 or along those lines.. Not really sure which one to believe..
Thinking might go for a bash down to the 3 mile tomorrow morning to look for some pinks or king george.. Depending on the weather of course, but might be worth a shot.. Let us know if your going out or have any luck over the weekend..
Have a good one, regardless!
Cheers Adam

Agree there Reg
From the sounds of Ocean Outlook Sunday is the day.. But there is a change coming through around lunch time they say.. Few mates don't think it will come in until the afternoon, but I don't think were going to take the chance and head tomorrow..

Going to head to our local spot down on the 3 mile for some Pinky action.. Got some awesome burly so hopefully will be all good.. Heard on good authority that theres meant to be some down there up to 10kg.. Hope So!!!!
Hope you get into some on Sunday Reg.. Few mates are going out from Mindarie as there are supposedly some monster sambo's out from there at the moment.. Let us know how you go.

Here ya go tommy, try this after berlying up.. big part of the mulie.. float it down slowly.. wait for tension and hook up..
well.. so the theory goes..
Swivel, which you attach to the clip swivel on your main line.. little bit of weight if in a bit of depth.. to a 5/0 hook, good quality..

Saturday Results
Well after going to our usual spot and finding the echo loaded with fish, we anchored up, berleyed up and waited for them to come on.. After 20 minutes the bloody anchor rope frayed itself off and drifting was the option.. First drift provided a good sized sambo that we thought was a big pinky by the thumping headshakes, only to be a little disappointed..
After that the fish gods taught me a lesson, 4 rigs later I still hadn't hooked up on anything apart from mother earth. We decided to use a make shift anchor and managed to hookup on some featureless ground with some schooling fish on it. After putting down the bomber burley we waited for a bit and the small sambos came on.. We managed to catch about 6 and a skippy, with me getting buried another 2 times.. One on the 6kg and I had no chance to stop and another one on 15kg braid and a nearly fully locked drag on my spheros 12000fa. After losing 50 meters of line in 20 meters of water, I knew I was in trouble.. Ping, there went another rig.. My last fish of the day was a monster scorpion cod, summing up my day. 6 rigs, one small sambo, whilst the captain hooked up onto the bottom more and somehow managed to save his..
Was still a good morning on the water, despite being 2 degrees and bloody freezing this morning..
Heres a few photos.

Haven't tried samsonfish
Makes life a little harder when you don't have the ol gps. But most of our sambo's came from a random spot that looked good on the echo.. Just a big berley trail of old crushed mussels and mulies seemed to work. The echo was absolutely packed most of the day as well and it was coming up to a high tide at 12;30.. So either they weren't on the bite yet or they were all well fed after the storms. There was a lot of sand and stirred up water out there, could have had something to do with it.
Just have to finish some work on my boat and get some seatime first.. Got a few days off work the week after next, so should have it good and going by then.
Never really tried eating them.. Have heard that they are meant to be not too bad in the smaller size, probably should have tried one to see.. Will have to keep one next time to see, with a good recipe and ingredients you can make most fish taste pretty damn good..
