Victorian snapper report

Hey guys!

As some of you may know its snapper season in Victoria, and boy oh boy are they running hot.

Got out for my first session on the weekend. Had the lines in the water by 430am andhad about 10 runs early with no hook ups . It was really strange as we were fishing single circles... so we were starting to think it might be one of those days. Anyway., as soon as the sun hit the water the action started to heat up.

In a three hour session we boated 17 fish (15 released), and dropped atleast 10. We had about three triple hook ups, and a quad... the action was non stop. It did slow down for a little bit so we got out the BBQ and right on time two rods buckled over. Average size for the fish was about 3.5kg, great fun on light gear. I also managed my PB of 7.6kg (89cm) on a 2000 size combo, took about ten minutes to get him up and I was wrapped. Here is a few photos from my iphone, picked the worst day to forget the gopro and memory card for the camera, it always happens like that. haha

Good signs early

PB!!

Good size fish! I read on facebook from the youfishTv crew that research had shown that in the last two years the snapper in Port Phillip Bay have hardly breed. Maybe a ban is in order lol. Do you know anything about that?

Haven't heard that beau, would be a bit suprising though, the numbers have gone through the roof in the last few years. Personally I would like to see the bag limit reduced and the size increased. Need to look after the fishery.

Looks good.

Are you fishing any particular structure??  Anchor and burley??

Looks fairly barren on the sounder.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

That is not good news Beau,

That is not good news Beau, hopefully fisheries act on that information to ensure there is fish for the future. Unfortunately there are two many ppl who to many fish on a constant basis.

Grayzee, there is really any structure in port Phillip besides artificial reefs. In saying that this time of year the snapper are mostly found in the mud flats, just sound around until you find some and your usually set. We have a few marks that always produce even without sounding fish.
