Submitted by fab on Sun, 2012-07-08 15:25
Was just reading the sunday times, and i read that thevenard is closed to fishing. Does anyone know anything about this? And if its true, how long is it closed for? I cant believe it, as i go every year, and absolutely love the place.

Hey Wes F, thanks for your reply. Is it because of all the chevron mining in the area?

Chevron Activities
I'm not 100% sure what Chevron are up to, but when a company is finished doing what they do and the lease is finished they have a mandate to return the site back to how it was within reason. This is normally determine by DEC, EPA and other relevant government bodies. If the infastructure on the island is to be de-commissioned and can't be taken over by another company than the other operators on the island are forced to close. IT's a shame but some good may come out of it in the future. I can't see any reason why boaties cant make their own way over, but like other islands up and down the coast you may not be able to camp, day use only. May open up a business oppurtunity for someone Eco Camping& Fishing Charters or Boat Based Charters i.e. Rowley Shoals.
I've also heard but not confirmed workers for WA Oil based on Barrow will not be able to fish whilst on Barrow (new Chevron regulation).

I've heard the facilities
I've heard the facilities have been bought out and are being improved to accommodate fly in fly out workers working in onslow. Seems like a lot of effort considering the miles of land east of the coast that they could slap up a couple of dongas on

arh memories
Have some good ones of good ole thevenard, around the mid 80,s
Bernie and Dot, old 17 foot star boats ( cutting edge then!)
100 lb handlines for bottom bouncing, hard water for showers
But it shows you how little we matter in the grand schemes of W.A , that
we as the main users of said place , seem to have no idea whats happening there
and big business and govts just roll on doing there own thing , leaving the crumbs for the
the little men, us , the sods whom put them there in the first place, and pay there wages! ( govts)
and in the case of big business , usually work for them and produce there profits.
Lets hope that one day , me and your kids can visit and stay on a unique and beautiful part
of WA to relax and unwind from the increasing daily pressures of modern life, and make memories of there own,
oh and leading on from that , dont vote green , a threat to our way of life in W.A
