Surf Reel / Combo Advice
I'm after some advice on re-balancing my surf combos. I have searched around on the forum and looked at some of the existing similar threads already.
I currently have the following three setups
1. A 10ft Finnor Fury with an Okuma NV-80 and 20 pound mono. Got this about 2 years ago when I got back into fishing. It has served me well for herring and even a salmon last year at Bunkers Bay.
2. A 10ft Daiwa AIRD with Daiwa AIRD 4000 Reel and 30pound fireline. This is the one I use the most as it is light and casting distance is good. Last week in Albany I was casting down to the mono backing so I am a bit worried about the size of the spool for more serious beach fishing.
3. A 12ft Shimano Aerowave Surf Graphite Composite Medium-Heavy with Finnor Lethal 100 and 80 pound Sunline Super PE. I haven't really had time to use this much and casting distance is not great probably due to the line width.
I am hoping to have some more time to fish soon and want to get something that increases my casting distance. I will be chasing tailor and hopefully mulloway from the beach. I'm thinking the best way to do this will be to replace the reel on the Aerowave with something a bit more sensible.
Any ideas would be welcome and I'm willing to end up replacing both reel and rod but would prefer to do one at a time. I''m not in a hurry and do not have a budget in mind but let's say up to $200 for a new reel.
Thanks

Hey mate I dont see an issue
Hey mate I dont see an issue with your combos. I would of thought the aerowave would be perfectly suited to casting mulies and 4oz of lead into the surf. I would use the Aird combo for lures and bait casting and Lethal for bait soaking.
I would down grade to 12-15lb braid on the Aird and 30lb on the Lethal. I like Fins or fireline. Also use as little mono backing as possible.
If the $200 is burning a hole in your pocket, Stradic 5000 to replace Aird and the Spheros' are bloody cheap online! I would upgrade the Lethal with a Spheros first.
Edit: fishwrecked.com/forum/windcast-z5500 this looks a decent buy..

Chuck a spheros 8000 on the aerowave, 30pound braid.. watch your bait fly out.

If you get 2 spools
load one with thin low stretch mono (platypus 8kg is good) and the other with braid, 20-30pd is heaps for most off the beach.
If there is weed about use the mono, if the water is clear or the weed sparse, out with the braid.
Fishing braid in weed soup is not fun, though many do and 'get away with it'. My opinion.
The 12ft rod should do the business in most beach situations. Seen them in action and they look good for the $$.
