So, my reel came back from shimano..

2-3 weeks ago I dropped my 6month old stradic FJ in the water. It was only in for about 5 sec. I rinsed it with fresh water, put some of the oil in the maintenance port and there didn't seem to be any issue. Next day I picked it up and it wasn't as smooth any more. I put up a topic on this forum, to get some opinions on what to do.

Yewiefish offered to have a look, he opened it, put some oil where needed and mentioned he couldn't find any trace of salt in it, but the reel was still not smooth so I sent it to the service center. I got it back today with an invoice of 95$ (15 of which were freight back to me) I must say I was quite surprised.. that's about half the cost of a new reel! Apparently they replaced 3 bearings..

It's smooth as new again, but still I would have expected a call to let me know how much it would end up costing me to have it fixed..

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that it was dropped in the water and that somebody already had a look at it and they may have fixed it under warranty..

Not sure what I'm getting at with this post now.. guess I'd like to know if it's normal to pay this amount of money for a reel service - fix? Especially if Yewie couldn't find anything really wrong with it..

Yep.

The good lads at Campbell's sent my ci4 Stradic off for a few new bearings the other day, after it had a small seizing spasm not long ago. It was only just over 12 months old, and it was a similar price to your repair.

Unfortunately, salt water isn't good for the reels, and as the fellas explained to me, the maintenance port doesn't necessarily service the bearings.

I'm pretty meticulous with rinsing and washing down my gear, but I think I'll be just giving it a light mist after most trips, and a good wash every month or so, from now on.

There is a box on a shimano

There is a box on a shimano service form which you can tick if you require quote first. Despite this I still think  it couldn't have hurt to call but nothing you can do there.

Bearings are unfortunately never/rarely covered by warranty and if a person beside Shimano service staff  opens the  reel then warranty is void.

Your description of the problem sounded like bearings were buggered from salt but I guess that answers itself  by the question of whether it feels normal again?

So taking out freight it was $80 to replace 3 bearings including parts. Sounds reasonable to me.

Yep once you dunk an unsealed reel with lots of bearings it's Gunna be trouble! Makes for a hard call to not just buy a new one for the ones that cost around the 100 mark or just above if you can't service them yourself.

Grease, grease, grease. I coat the bearings (especially the main crank bearings exposed on either side of reel)and pack all my reels with grease as it stops water intrusion into the bearings and moving parts. Have dunked a few reels with no issues (still disassembled and cleaned out)

If you google bearing suppliers and have the dimensions of the bearing you will be able to get one of them to mail you up new ones

You got off lucky if it only

Tue, 2012-08-07 20:39

You got off lucky if it only cost you $95. Those bearings would have had to be replaced sooner or later.....generally it is later when a reel is dunked. may feel ok for a few days, but down the track, it's not as lucky. I've had reels come back to the store, which have had a near-on complete reconstruction, because of salt water damage. Sent a stella back for a customer, which had been dunked, and it was going to cost almost as much as a new reel to repair it.

This is a hard one

Tue, 2012-08-07 21:06

Been down the saragosa line. Would I send it for service to Shimano. Answer: NO. Get the locals to have a look, fix it- Ok. Cant fix it? Use it and see. The service for my 2 I have sent in would have just about bought me one.

As for the Stella"s, well If I dunked it I would, but then it was me using it that caused the problem. Would take a few services to cover that cost.

The more I fish the more I realise that I might be better getting quality gear at max $200-300, use it and abuse it like I am prone to do, and once rooted replace. I am not a comp fisher, and bling cost heaps and I dont get anything back other than a fish. It might have been easier with the best gear if competing etc, but I dont see that a Stella gets me a fish much much easier than a Sara etc. Had as much fun with my CI4 than the equivilant Stella, and the CI4 isnt what you would call cheap, its just the Stella is $$$$. Believe it or not I would use the 4000CI4 above the Stella???

Anything that involved labour is out off hands, and as soon as you see it, caveat emptor. You are going to pay.

It is becoming more and more a throw-away society. Best thing, look after them from the start, and I am not the best at that. If it gets a problem, its my fault, and I wil laccept the blame and move on.

Some poor bugger down the line still has to undo the screws, grease it up etc, and gets paid a diddle for it. Someone pays for his work, and I am afraid its us.

Bloody shimano bearings

Tue, 2012-08-07 21:57

$18 each!!  did a bit of research and picked up some for alot less than that.

If anyone needs a full set of TLD 30 2 speed bearings I got a spare set for sale! $35 for 4 bearings

I pulled my 8000 stradic apart,  not quite as good as new but damn near!   If you do it yourself pay attention to the little bits!

Tierra 4000 dunked at beach,  stripped down,  too much grease and oil in and now it hardly turns!  Smooth but hard to turn!

Its either DIY and chancing a rougher reel or pay thru the nose for quality.

Tue, 2012-08-07 23:09

Hey guys I have sent all of my shimano reels back to shimano for their respected services, and they go to dumphy sports in nsw, I haven't had a problem with any of them, but I did explain what I wanted and they did it to the letter, and quoted me a price and it didn't change, that's why I love shimano. Only personnel experience I've had with them but it was worth it, IMO?There is a place close to me that is just as good,PM if you want there names,as we just had 5 reels serviced and they came back perfect. I'm in the Mandurah area

Cheers lads

I can guarantee you that shimano wont cover bearings under waranty as others have said.

maybe have a look at ceramic bearings if you think you may dunk it regularly

So.. lessons learnt.. don't

So.. lessons learnt.. don't throw your reel in the drink!

Anyway, I wasn't having a go at the shimano guys or anything. In the end it was my own stuff up.. Labour costs were quoted at 20$ which is not that crazy. And indeed, bearings were 18 each..

Bearings

Thu, 2012-08-09 15:43

I have always just changed them myself if I can find the equivalent size. The bearings in reels are usually some rust resistant stainless alloy and cost and fortune. But they still rust. I just get normal steel bearings but with double rubber shields. I have found they last longer and cost a fraction of the orginal spec bearings.
