Sniffing Mulloway

Chatting to a mate today about catching Mulloway and I said, "me and the ol man can smell them at times in the shallower waters". A quick google says that it's possible if you know the smell. Anyone else here can sniff out a Mulloway? Why do you think it's possible?

Maybe they are releasing an attractant or rubbing off some slime, but you can definately smell them

I can smell them if they've been caught, but not going to the water and saying I can smell them swimming around. Used to walk out the jetty in Busso in the morning and you could usually tell if they got them the last night from the smell.

 Have heard this many times

Have heard this many times but I've always thought it's more likely someone recently caught/cleaned one in the area, maybe the day before? From experience my backyard stunk for 3 or 4 days after cleaning one, not to mention the freezer after having to store the head and frame for a few days :/

 Can definitely hear them

Can definitely hear them when you are anchored on a quiet night. The croaking reverberates through the floor of the tinny.

I would believe it, i remember boarding a Chinese ship a while back and they had caught 1 . Chopped into pieces and was in the process of being turned into a soup. You could smell it from the boat deck to the bridge deck crook stench and 1 of the reasons i wouldn't bother trying to cstch them. Bit like the story boil it with a brick throw the lot out and eat the brick , rate them up there with salmon .

Blind man..

" hello ladies"   But seriously, you think mulloway have a "stench?'  They have a distinctive smell, to be sure, but I reckon it verges on a sweet smell. Now, if you want a real stench, gut a big pinky who has been gorging on sandcrabs in a swell. Now there is a putrid stink.  And Willo, you would rate them with salmon for eating?? You've obviously never eaten one, or maybe ate a really huge one which should have been returned anyway. In the middle size ranges, they are a good eating fish.

Ranmar , after walking past the galley where 1 had been chopped up and was on a slow boil in prep for some kind of chinese soup , well '''''' i mean i dont have the words to explain the stench lol. Have eaten a smaller 1 years ago ,from memory was tolerable but not a fish i would target. Now Queen snapper or blue morwong theres a pong you could do without as well. Maybe a good thread to start ,Worst Smelling or Tasting fish you have encountered.

It is true

Mon, 2017-06-26 17:11

We have smelt the mulloway before we have caught them and there wasn't another fish around that was caught before.
Have smelt them off the beach and Busso jetty.
Has to be the right weather conditions though.
I have caught more than 80 10kg plus mulloway over 30 years and would have only smelt them maybe 8 times

Having never boiled a mulloway..

Tue, 2017-06-27 06:04

You could be right. What a horrible thing to do to fish. We used to spear big buff bream up here and boil it up as dog food ( easier and more fun than shooting roos) , and that reeked, too.
