Shark bay dhufish

How does everyone go in shark bay are there a few dhufish around? Been stopping past the karrinyup seafood shop lately and they have had a fair amount of shark bay dhu? Am I thinking too much into this? Can a pro boat off-load in shark bay and say they were caught locally? It bloody sucks walking in and seeing this thinking we can't go out and catch them ourselves.

Marketing spin

I have been told by a mate that they once caught Dhufish off Shark Bay.....once and he's been literally many dozens of times.

I have been there around 12 times and never seen one, although we have caught quite a few Pearl Perch.

The pic looks like Dhufish rather than Pearl Perch but it is hard to say.

I've speared a dhue at the northern end of Berliner Island off carnarvon though I think this is just marketing. Once saw farmed sashimi grade Exmouth  yellowtail king was $76 a kilo to.

Dhufish

Got one about 6kg off Koks Island a few years back and all the neigh sayers said that it was a pearly , yet after spending many years pro fishing catching both dhufish and northern species one knows the difference.

I have heard of a few caught out of there but thinking the boat was more likely fishing a fair way south and just unloaded there .

I was looking at the first

I was looking at the first label Alan, point is the labels can be misleading. Even the rear label "wild caught from Shark Bay) can mean anything. Boat head's out from there but fishes 200 miles south, who knows.

Mate that could mean anything, like Russ said could be caught miles south and landed at SharkBay.

shark bay

I have gone thru the southern chanel between Dirk Hartog and the main land and caught them seaward of the cliffs both north and south of the chanel.Never actualy in the bay, but because we land them on the main land we tend to say we caught themat Shark Bay. Hope this clarifies the situation.

so as to interpret what the sign actually says , under normal circumstances this would not be an issue but because of the ban it has implications and it does not help if a shop is selling  dhuis in perth labelled caught in shark bay ... does not say landed in shark bay!

Seems like there is a shit

Thu, 2023-09-21 17:32

Seems like there is a shit load of grey area here. Do the pro's have to record where they take there catch from? I'm not talking waypoints more the areas within a few K's of where they were caught?

They all have tracking on their boats, they must notify Fisheries when they leave or come back from a trip by phone.

Not exactly sure where the southern boundary is for the ones fishing north of Kalbarri but I know it is south of Steep Point but not how far.

During our annual pilgrimage to Steep Point we once caught 3 Dhus up to 15kg up against the cliffs just south of the entrance. We could hardly believe that they were this far up but the proof was in the pudding. Never seen or caught any in that location since.

Doubt

Thu, 2023-09-28 10:37

If in doubt the best way to find out is when you clean them. Pearl perch have a black lining in their gut cavity while Dhufish don't.
