Rotto

Hi everyone.

Me and a mate have spent a lot off time out at rotto the last 3 months with at least 3 trips out a week. We have been having some great fishing but since the ban has come in, we havent had much luck with stuff we can catch. Because off the ban we have been doing some jigging and trawling. We have had some great days jigging but there are too many sharks down there. We lost 7 lures within an hour jigging and hooking fish then getting busted. Annoying as hell. We spent 4 hours trawling behind rotto but havent had any luck.

Does anyone have any tips for Lures or weather conditions that are ideal to snag some Mackerel or Tuna?? Trawling is the go atm but ive heard that the water needs to be abit warmer before they start reving up?

Also does anyone know what date they tow the FADS out?? Ive heard november but not sure what date??

Thanks

Hey mate - I'd stick with

Hey mate - I'd stick with trolling small skirts (Jelly Babes and Xmas Tree) and another couple with Deep Divers (7 meter); that's what worked best for us lately for SBF, Bonito (Shark Mackies are around too).

As for the FADs deployment - 14th of Nov is the date   not too far away

you catch heaps if you were 'trawling' a net as opposed to 'trolling' lures

How long after the FADS are deployed would you expect there to be fish on them? Would take a while for the growth to build, baitfish to congregate etc...? I wouldnt mind trollin up some bonnies on light gear, has anyone caught them within say 3 mile offshore metro lately???

Couple of us got these not too far off the 3 mile reef on Sunday - so much fun on 3 Kg mono (YTK were on 6 Kg though)

Bonitos kept for bait later on

Hi guys,

First time poster but long time reader and seeker of advice and tips from FW, so cheers to all the regular and not so regular contributors - especially for all the laughs and humour. Can you tell me what sort of tuna you got in the picture as I was out with mates on Saturday trawling around the Gemini and we had a load of fun catching about 15 of these as well as some Bonito. Are these SBF, Big Eye or neither? Any advice best on best way to prepare and cook them would also be gratefully accepted. Those YTK's must look great too - well done.

Hey Doc ... the Tunas in the photo are SBF (BET is usually mixed up with YFT). I like them on the chew; usually Sashimi or Burgers (rear cooked); I like most of the Tunas, as they've got strong flavor into them. Bonitos are very "red" for me, so I prefer to use them as whole bait.

YTK go like trains, even on this small size (65-70cm).
