Rigs and hooks for Mullet

As much as I want to talk about shark culling/greenies/Colin Barnett etc.... I am to interested in wanting to catch mullet (not the blind or hairy species either!).

if anyone can help out with rigs, hook size etc. I would like to hear from you.  I have a couple of spots that can be fished with or without a boat where I see them fairly regularly in shallow water. I'll be using regular rod and reel as well as giving the fly rod a go (bought some breadcrumb flys for this).

Any good recipes are welcome also.

Cheers

G

Small hooks

You want the smallest of hooks, very light line and bakers dough or similar for bait.

Sea or pilch (yellow eye)

Thu, 2014-09-11 19:57

Pilch (yellow eyed mullet) are quite easy.. I fish for then the same way as gardies, small float small hook tiny piece of prawn and a bit of burley..

Sea mullet on the other hand I've tryed everything bread, corn, peas, weed and have never even had a sniff from one..even in huge schools.. I've heard people say they have caught them on these baits but when I've actually talked to them more about it I've found our they jagged them and didn't want to say it on a public forum.. I've also caught a few on lures Foul hooked while fishing for tailor around there schools but if anyone can show me a method of catching them on baited hook consistently and line I'm happy to pay a fair some of money because they would be very handy in my competition fishing.. PM me if this is you and we'll discuss a figure..

Hope this helps.. Belly

 Thanks for the advice fellas,

Belly, I've researched a bit and will combine few ideas to crack the sea mullet code, if I do you will be the first to know.  Gonads thanks for the tip on square hooks method, I'm keen to get them on the rod and reel, we'll have to see how we go.

cheers

getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

 Don't bother trying to catch

Don't bother trying to catch them on line it will frustrate the crap out of you, I have caught them in the swan river using spotties on the boat and a net, drive upto them slowly then throttle up with a net behind them.

 60m gill net mandurah estury

Sat, 2014-09-13 21:53

60m gill net mandurah estury when in season is how i chase mullet, best way if you want a feed or fresh bait.. as for on hooks only as by catch while chasing herring off whitehills... we were casting a float full of polard with a small hook trailing behind... just had a small white wall plug placed over the shank of the hook, simply cast & retrieve... maybe burley up the water and cast and retrieve through the burley trail.
