Pipis and sand worms

I am intrigued by Andy Mac's comment on diving for pipi's off Albany on Dreamweaver's post.
I was wondering if these are the same pipis that you get over east?
Do you get them at the beaches down south?
I am also wondering if there are any sandworms in the West?
Many thanks, Colin Hay

We used to catch the giant

Mon, 2008-06-09 14:27

We used to catch the giant sandworms on the east coast beaches by waving fish parts tied up in a stocking in the wash of the waves. You would then wait for a sandworm to stick its head up and you would move down, place a piece of fish or a pippi where the sand worm had put its head up. When it came out again and grabbed hold of your bait you woud grab it behind the head and slowly pull it out. They would be quite a few feet long and fantastic bait.(Colin 1 - Co-founding member of the prestigious Colin Club)

Pipis

Mon, 2008-06-09 14:59

Yes they are the same (I think). The ones down at Emu Point are much larger than the ones you get on local metro beaches.
We dig the small pipis down at Golden Bay and they make excellent pasta vongole.
Haven't seen the big sandworms but I know that when we fish for whiting in deep water they usually have a few hanging out of their mouths. They must gorge themselves on them at certain times of the year.

Wading Emu Point

Mon, 2008-06-09 15:15

Thats the best spot.
You will probably see a lot of people with buckets wading out there in summer. If you want the bigger ones take the snorkelling gear and have a dive.
There is a bag limit on them and local rules may apply too so be careful. I havent been down that way for over 10 years.
Here is a pic of my old dingy with the kids onboard taken at Emu point.

The pipis were just out from there if it gives you a reference point.

Hey Andy

Mon, 2008-06-09 15:41

Are they the pipis with the creamy yellow shells and the meat inside includes a big creamy coloured tongue and a white and grey coloured body?

Sea Shells

Mon, 2008-06-09 15:59

They are the creamy coloured sea shells you see in standard sea shell pics. Much like a clam in shape.
The ones at Golden Bay are pale blue and the size of a 10c piece. The Emu Point ones are the circumference of a mini CD.

They are great to eat if you put them on a barbie plate

Mon, 2008-06-09 16:08

in their shell and let them cook in the own juices. Just wait to the shell opens, put a little lemon juice on them - beautiful.
