Pinging and Boating Etiquette

Just wondering what everyone perceives as good boating behavior and etiquette when out at sea . Just about every time we go out  on the open sea's we get circled at anchor by boats trying to get in on the  action and mark out spot's, its not a fun day keeping watch all day and up rooting and taking off when a boat even think's of approaching not that i have anything to hide  but pinging is low. An example of this was sunday at five fathom bank being circled by a new Commodore Cruiser  then he set a drift close to us  to me this is not on . Sure if you know the skipper on the boat if invited approach with caution  and keep clear of lines in the water . I don't think there is any boat owner on this site which hasn't been pinged or buzzed , so what is the correct way to  interact on the water  ?

Some of my rules out in the boat

- If setting a course to a mark on my plotter and their is a boat drifting or anchored in the line of route i always divert around them and no closer than 150 metres

- Never drop in on a hot bite or burley trail , like the frenzy when the snapper are in the sound

- Never circle boats  that are anchored

Whats does everyone else think ?

I think this would be good as you would find most of the guy's pinging wouldn't be on this site and would be great to keep an eye out

i hate theses people who do this spot pinching. no matter how much etiquette we talk about there will always be some rude bastard out there that will take it. how ever a nice 16 oz snapper lead can fly a long way form my boat and there is a few guys out there that can verify that

twice

Tue, 2008-08-26 06:42

i went out last weekend, and decided to stay in the bay for a change, with the northerly, and how i went out to two spots, decent spots, and they are some 8mile between, both spots had boats on them, excatly where i wanted to go,,

i fished nearby one, felt uncorforable, as i wanted to go over and tell the guys ,, hey i,m not pinging but we have the same spot here fellas,

anyway we moved, these guys obviously thought we were pinging, so out we went, and  another boat , smack bang on the other spot,

very frustrating, as you drive a long way there, you want to fish it, but other pple are there also,

doesnt bother me that others have the spot at all, but the badluck of finding crew on  both in 1 day, we drifted a fair way off, but no fish, so we came back in.

______________________________________________________________________

on the other hand i have been out at a cple spots near the cape, waiting for wind to calm before headin further, and had one boat with 3 old guys come up , drop sea anchor like 30 metres away, we were like wtf...

yeled etc, they didnt even respond at all, full cheekiness, caught fish right there,

we moved after giving them a serve, and they hhad the move to come to the next spot which was like a mile away, we moved before they got to us, saw them trying to get on the spot, then motored past them tellen them wot we thought...

Common, increasing problem

Tue, 2008-08-26 07:03

Feral, there'so doubt that just about everyone in here that owns a boat and goes out on the ocean has experienced this problem. Certainly you folks in Perth cop it a lot, where there is a lot of boats and folks get desperate and more unscrupulous. But as John said, it doesn't just happen in Perth. I've even had it happen down here where there are a lot less boats and more fish Yell.

There's an element that are lazy and, as I said, unscrupulous. Personally, I take great pride and a sense of accumplishment in finding my own spots as doe we all in here.

I totally agree with the points that you raised. Asside from there being distance rules of greater than 8 knots when passing a vessel it's just not the right thing to do.

Without even bringing the pinging into it, people (and their vessel) have rights on the water!

The problem is certainly increasing and if something isn't done about it soon, people will (understandably) take things into their own hands.

Heheh

I only have a few spots on the handheld I have and I headed out to a spot on five fathoms to find 6 boats already on the spot.

so I motored around to the north to find a bit of nice ground.

Bit hard if you dont know where else to go and so many boats on the spot already.

That said its the spot that was floating around the net for yrs.

Jetties present the same problem with people fishing over your shoulder!
At least with trout fly fishing we can dissapear in the bush & there is definately etiquette practiced on a river anyway. Maybe its the back cast that does it, people dont seem to like flies decorating the back of their necks!

I`d rather be fishin`!!!

I always take binoculars and a camera with me. Most of those that start heading towards me, I hold up both and then start giving them the eyeball through the 'nocs' - has discouraged most, but not all.

I'm proud to say that, even as desperate as we are to find good ground, we try to steer well clear of people that are on the drop.

The only time we 'pinged' somebody was when we saw a cray boat dropping pots....we cruised over for a looksy as he was leaving.

We've only just started and we've already had people try to ping us...we always just have a laugh, bc little do they know that we have NO IDEA what we are doing!!! haha

Eddie we've only pinged on cray floats in Leeman, good out of season can go and have a good look at ground they know the area and the lumps are fantastic.  Hubbie hates also when they come close, older outboard motors play havoc with the sounder.

Agree Andrew, unfortunatly it happens every where and these boaties choose to ping because its easy and to much hard work finding their own grounds!

The last few trips out i've been followed then they realised the game i was playing so they took off but yeh pingers & shadowers are plentiful.........especially weekendsWink

My take;

* I "dont" approach others whilst they're drifting on their fishing spots unless they're a mate or someone that has invited me over Wink

* If someone is in my GPS line to my spot i will go around wide so no reason for them to "think" i'm doing the wrong thing.

* If i have a spot and some one is near by I will go elsewhere, no need to "give away" my spot or have the boat thinking i'm doing the wrong thing.

* On anchor your a "sitting duck" unfortunatly so thats why i dont do much of it.

* I like to drift and both the crew and myself keep an eye on the water so any boats approaching i'll slowly drift off the spot or slowly drive away.

All agreed and " Neander " , I know those marks ha ha have to get them back off you one day mate , another classic in the sound on sunday was about six boats anchored with in 30 metres of each other , probably saw one person pull in a fish and think the snapper are around . I think a name and shame forum would be good also give the people a chance in explaining them selves. And ryan you know your self of a few well known boats on here that catch fish regulary being targeted by the less fortunate and the games you have to play even before dropping a line . That is one of the reason's of my purchase of a radar unit for the fish finger  , not to track others spots but mainly to keep track of people around me and see if they are cicrling or buzzing other boats and also fishing at night

I strongly suspect that a bloke in a Signature pinged me on Saturday arvo out of Mindarie. Slowed right down, crossed about 20m in front of me and then took out like a bat out of hell. Jokes on him, the spot has never produced fish, we had already picked up a few fish elsewhere and thought we would give it one last try on the way home.

Tue, 2008-08-26 21:01

Considering Im on the drift when fishing I find it amusing that if someone is pinging me that they are most likely pinging a slow spot. In my view if they cant find theyre own ground then they arent real fishermen/fisherwomen. Whether they are on this forum or not I think the shaming list may change there ways with boating etiquette.

My 2 cents
