Overhead Drag Problem

Just bought a nice TN16 Trinidad from Wooden Fish.

Took it down to Bluewater to get the drag upgraded to carbontex.

They put it in and now it has less drag than before.  I would expect to be able to lock the thing up so I couldn't pull line off it but that wasn't the case.  I have left it there for them to scratch their heads over.

Anyone have any exeperience with this?

Am I right about thinking I should be able to lock it up or am I expecting too much?

They possibly put too much grease onto washers?

they said no - that you put so little on that you can't even get any off it if you rub it afterward...

Jip - could be wrong way round .... or ask them to check the thickness of the washers. It may be stacked - either too tight / or less - which means loss of drag. You should be able to lock once the star drag is maxed out.

stacked too tight?  I thought that they all just sat together and that the only thing that made them tight was screwing down the star?  Is that not right?

I chucked carbontex in a Calcutta and can't lock it up. I think because the carbontex are thinner they really need another spacing washer to go in so when you screw the star drag down it compresses the washers more. Besides locking up is what thumbs are for.

My experience with carbontex means a smoother drag, not necessarily more drag. You can also change the configuration of the ((())) shaped washers for different drag curves.

Certainly agree what Tim

Certainly agree what Tim said. Greased carbontex will give you a smoother drag, not more drag. By greased, you smear them with grease then rub it all off as they did.

I upgraded my saltiga to carbontex and I went from over 8-9kg of drag to down to 5kg or so. However, what I did was really crank the drag up. I mean really crank it (I used a tiny 5cm pipe for extra leverage :p) then back it off and repeated. I then found I had a lot more drag. I think the stack needed to be compressed a bit first before you'd expect lots of drag out of it. Pulling off 100m+ of line at a strong drag then tightening, winding in and repeating should help too. Also, consider if the washers were replaced back in the same configuration or not. Warning though, I did manage to shear off the star drag later :p (was several months down the track and had a new star sent out no problems though :p)

I havent really heard anyone who switched to carbontex who got more drag, so not sure whether they thought it would, or just you? If you can lock it up, chances are it wont be a smooth drag, because a smooth drag shouldnt lock up. You should be able to get more drag than initial if you wear the drag in by pulling off line, tightening and repeating. Just dont use a lever like I did :p.

Yeah - I wasn't,,,

expecting more - I was just annoyed that I seemed to have a fair bit less.  I thought I'd get the same but just really smooth.  Assuming the shark mission on Saturday goes ahead, maybe I just need one good sized ray to sort it out....  Thanks for your suggestions.  I think I will take the new drag setup and then just pull a big pile of line off it under strong drag and really have go at screwing it down.

Drag fixed.....

with thanks to Hlokk, Blou Walvis, Lucky Tim and flangies for coming back to me.

Thanks also to Rick at Bluewater who persisted and found that the removal of the drag clicker pin allowed the carbontex to sit just right as a result of which I did, in the end, get more drag than I started with.

All of this was about the Perth beach bash for Easter which no one has posted on for a little while so someone please tell me its still on!
