no mate not that expensive at all if it is just a seal only requires dropping the g/box good mechanic half hour labour twenty dollar seal and box back on within the hour but depends on where your boat is, dont expect it back too quickly though most marine places will not stock those seals

itsgearbox oil mixed with water and not a good sign as water has somehow mixed with the gerabox oil, shoulnd be expensive as the seal itself is 20 bucks but youre really paying for the labour involved

seals

depending on where it is leaking it is probably worth resealing the box. prop shaft, bearing carrier o-rings, d/shaft seals and shift shaft seal. i resealed a 40hp yamaha box yesterday $195 in seals and 2 hours labour.
stilly id love to see you drop a box and change a prop shaft or d/shaft seal in under and hour and run the engine.

well they have said all the seals are stuffed, there is water in the gearbox?

was only running on one carby? but the motor has good compression or something, i guess when you by 2nd hand you hav e to expect somethings to go wrong.

going to cost about $1000.....

the compression is just how good the piston and rings are sealin

on the cylinder, you mentioned running on one carby, what was wrong with the other one, did it work at wide open throttle if running on one carby

Yeh it worked well. Didn't

Thu, 2010-01-28 17:34

Yeh it worked well. Didn't notice there was any difference. The only sign there was something wrong was the milky discharge and if I am honest it was slightly noiser than normal.....

So I am glad the seals went at the same time can't believe only one carby was working and I was still going fast...... The guys think its a 65hp when its only a 55hp the motor has been worked. So good signs as well as Bad.

sorry mate just need to add if you have a drive shaft seal u/s why would you then touch the bearing carrier?? when generally when "oi yella" is saying 55 (correct if im wrong but im assuming its the old hand grenade two cylinder johno) mind the pun, bearing carrier will be seized in anyhow (murphy's law) requiring uneccesary labour upping the total cost?

sorry i really am not sure what are talking about when you are refering to the bearing cyclinder. I am not mechanicly sound with outboards or any engine. i have a 55hp tohatsu is this an old hand grenade two cyclinder?

the boat has not been run for 12mths, it had been sitting in a garage as the previous owner has passed away. when i took it down to rockingham boat repairs i told them to look over the whole motor?

so i dont know if all the work ins nessecary, but i dont want to get stuck out somewhere in the middle of the ocean.

stilly to replace prop shaft seals generally the bearing carrier has to come out. i can drop a box in half an hour no worries. what are you a backyardie.
