Mandurah

A couple of questions, and I'm not necesarily after secret spots or anything (Although they would be welcome!) but how close in can you find tuna, sampsonfish, snapper, etc? I've moved to Silver Sands late last year, been fishing the beaches here, but given it up as a bad joke, looking at getting a boat, seeing the Mrs has all but given it the tick of approval. I haven't got a huge budget or much storage space at the moment, so the smaller I can get away with the better...to a point! I'd also appreciate any pointers on how to find gummies here too.

I realise I'm probably being a bit ambitious asking about tuna, but if bonito can come into Cockburn sound, surely they must come in close to Mandurah, along with stripies, etc? I've done a lot of small boat tuna fishing over east, is it a possibility here? I'm more into sporting, fighting fish than eating, and I don't plan on heading out a long way to bottom bounce

Cheers

Have caught some nice gummies while drifting over the sand inside of the james service reef while chasing a feed of sand whiting. We just put a whole herring out on a bigger outfit to drift along the bottom behind the boat as we go. Have also caught size dhufish on the reef itself and can have some light tackle fun with the skippy there aswell. You will see the james service reef is not far out from silver sands at all. Hope this gives some ideas.

For Snapper, Sambo's, Dhuies and the rest try berlying on the five fathom bank. The area does get hammered by alot of smaller boats but there are still good fish to be had.

Have caught some stonker sambo's on unweighted baits and Soft Plastics Aswell as Dhufish to 10kg on the Five Fathom Bank. The key is to find fish on your sounder and anchor and berley. Dont neccessarilly fish over the tops of lumps either. Ive cuaght more on the flat hard ground. I preffer to fish in depths of 14-17m.

As for the Gummies definitley around James Service as Jighead mentioned.

For the Tuna look for working birds behind Five fathom bank in 20m and deeper. They are Usually Southern Bluefin Tuna upto 6kg. Casting metal slices and sinking stickbaits or trolling small skirts around upwind of them normally produces the goods.

Cheers

Agree with jighead and blake, I have a 4.5m tinny and always have fun on the 5 fathom bank. Just have a good sound around & plenty of burley, there are some good fish to be had there. My brother in law has been getting a few just size yt kings in the past couple of weeks on the inside edge of the ffb. You never know what will turn up.

cheers

Some good advice is always welcome - probably looking at around a 4-4.5m tinny, was thinking about smaller but I would really like to get out to the bank. Don't think I'd like to attempt it in anything smaller. Anyone got a good 4.5m tinny for sale?
