Boat versus Jetski

Mon, 2010-08-30 21:28

Hey Ron

I actually have a boat and never use it anymore since I got my new ski. I find it better as its easier to launch by myself and I can go out alone. I guess it helps that I have friends with jetskis also. I use my jetski for wakeboarding, ski biscuits plus fishing or cruising. I do day trips up the river or head over to carnac or garden island for a BBQ with the girlfriend.. I am currently cleaning the boat and going to sell it.

Milsey, you would have seen me and my mate fishing off south beach and then yeah we pretty much went flat stick all the way back to woodmans point. We were squidding with Johan earlier on over near the Cockburn Cement jetty. The eskies are held down pretty tight and everything gets covered in salt water but I use SALTAWAY on my ski and also my gear and it is all holding up pretty good. The echo sounder holds the bottom perfectly at over 80km/hr, although if you get air it messes up but that would happen on a boat also.

they would be good over at

Mon, 2010-08-30 21:33

they would be good over at rotto around the reefs when the sambos/samon are running, easy to get in and out.

are you allowed to go out to rotto on them?

I don't think so but we

Mon, 2010-08-30 21:43

I don't think so but we could probably ask special permission for such a trip, if it is controlled it might be allowed. We can not really go further than 5NM as our vessels are under 3.75 meters. That is according to the rule book.

I am not sure about that,

Mon, 2010-08-30 22:04

I am not sure about that, will have to find out, not sure who to ask at this point. Maybe some of the surfers would know because they use SKi's to get onto big waves.

Yep, good idea Ron, will you help? We need a boat that can at least load two JetSki's one for fishing and one for safety,Smile. Not such a bad idea afterall.

Ski's and rotto.

Mon, 2010-08-30 23:13

for a ski to be at Rotto it must ne a tender for a boat.

Ie you must be able to put ski in the boat.

You can not ride to rotto on your ski as its past the 5 nm mile limit...  and you can't ride there legally in convoy with a boat..

I will try to clear things up a little

Mon, 2010-08-30 23:44

There is nothing stopping you from taking your jetski to rotto, but it must be 3.75m in length as that is what is stated in the rules. It does not have to be a tender and you do not have to be able to put it in your boat, its all about being longer than 3.75m.

This is the link which states it all http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/imarine/19242.asp

This pretty much sums it all up "All boats under 3.75 metres (12 feet) in length (including personal watercraft), must stay within five nautical miles from the mainland, unless they are within the limits of a port or within one mile of any island."

So technically you can travel 5NM off the coast and if you are within 1NM of an island you are allowed to go to it and this is why its fine for a PWC to travel to carnac or garden island. That link above also explains in detail what safety equipment you need to carry, I personally carry an EPIRB regardless in I am in the EPIRB exempt zone or not, handheld VHF radio, sand andchor and 50m of rope, sea anchor, signal mirror, offshore flare kit, PFD1, plus I have other little bits and pieces.

I have been to the DPI and they said that if your under 3.75m you can ride 5NM off the coast, then get towed to within 1NM of rotto and then ride the rest of the way in. Once your there it would be awesome for fishing around the reefs.

In response to what Johan said about a speical trip and permissions to rotto for a trip, it wont happen. The guys who run the jetsportwest website have run 2 such special trips and it took them a hell of a lot of time, they had to get permission from the fremantle ports, rottnest authorities plus search and rescue and the DPI i believe. The second trip they did saw I believe 80 jetskis go to rotto and after the trip they got told it would never happen again as there was just too many. It had nothing to do with people being idiots, it was purely the fact there was too many people who went. I ran into the guy who organised it and he said they wont be doing another.

So lets get back to the 3.75m ruling. There is no worldwide standard as to how boats in general are measured. When boats are measure for performance reasons its under the hull. When you buy a boat its normally from the tip of the bow to the middle of the stern and doesnt include the motor or bowsprits. When you hire a pen they measure the overall length including engine and bowsprit. If you buy a wakeboard boat they include the rear transmon in the overall length. I have reasearched this all in depth. It is my understanding that if your jetski is under 3.75m and you make it longer by the means of a bowsprit or rear transmon then legally you are within your rights to travel more than 5NM off the coast as long as you carry all the correct safety gear.

Another interesting thing to remember is the rulings say "All boats under 3.75 metres (12 feet) in length (including personal watercraft), must stay within five nautical miles from the mainland, unless they are within the limits of a port or within one mile of any island." If you look at this link http://www.fremantleports.com.au/EnvironmentSafety/navigating_fremantle_waters.pdf it shows you the extent of the fremantle ports limits. From looking at that you can actually go about 10NM off the coast if you are on the northern side of rotto as it is within the fremantle ports and it is approximately 2.5NM from rotto. So after you take all that into consideration if you say rotto is about 10NM off the coast you can legally travel 7.5NM to rotto, get towed 1.5NM and then ride the last 1NM into rotto... Its all a very gray area if you ask me..

I personally do fish well over 5NM off the coast, however I got out with another jetski and also another boat. Safety in numbers is my motto....

Hope that clears it all up for people....

another link

Tue, 2010-08-31 08:28

http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/mar_rb_pwc-0310.pdf

The above link actually says "PWCs greater that 3.75m travelling beyond five nautical miles of the shore must also carry, in addition to the above, a marine radio and 2 parachute distress flares".. As I was explaining last night you are perfectly within your right to go off the coast as far as you like, just as long as your at a minimum length of 3.75m. I have actually printed this sheet, laminated it and carry it with me as I know sooner or later I will get pulled over and told I cannot be so far off the coast as most people are not aware of the rules. Cheers fellas...

Good informating

Tue, 2010-08-31 20:13

Thanks for that John, it seems you have done your homework well. Have you thought of ideas on lenghthening the ski, either with a bowsprit or some sort of device at the back. Must this be fixed to the ski, i.o.w., what if I just hook on one of those life saving floating boards at the back of the ski, like the life savers use. Will that work? I guess it will be in the way when fishing though as you will not be able to take your line past it to get to the other side if the fish goes under the ski.

The bowsprit sounds like a good idea to me but that means I will need to drill holes in the ski to mount it. Could be a option.
