Haha, it wouldn't surprise me!

I've seen some pretty whacked things in those ponds around Canning Vale.  I've even ventured down to one in particular to have a crack at a 4-6 kg koi.  Spoke to a young fella that nets gilgies for his pet barra.

Fri, 2014-11-21 11:03

went on FishWrecked [local fishing forum] and there is a number of different posts on here saying there is a spot off Roe Highway, where there is monster Murray Cod.

"It has something of a game which is why the Fisheries Department has become involved.

"Someone has been translocating the species in our waterway which looks like a real issue."

the above is from the source, just shows that the fisheries etc. do watch the site,

Electro Fishing to

Fri, 2014-11-21 12:52

Electro Fishing to exterminate feral fish in a relatively small closed lake ,  being it took out a 10kg fish . I presume it indiscriminately fries all other marine creatures in the vicinity as well frogs , tadpoles and baby turtles etc .

Not a full bottle on electro fishing and presume the researchers have a handle on it  but is this method the best way to handle the situation ... wouldn’t dragging a net back and forth be a better alternative than killing everything ??

The electro fishing I have seen in US for Bass and such just stuns the fish and they recover unharmed and returned.

Hmmm certainly looks like someone has been transplanting Australian native fish around the place or people have been dumping fish from aquariums and this is the result. I might have to rig up a scaly mac and visit the local park lake late at night.

dont see a problem

Fri, 2014-11-21 19:13

why is it a problem relocating an Australian native fish to wa. It would be great if murray cod were introduced to some rivers down south . They have been decimated over east, I know of a member of this site that has stocked a cetain lake in the metro area with yabbies and marron , I have got some good feeds of yabbies' out of it but no marron yet, and yes if I got a marron out of it ofcourse i would return it if it was out of season,

Sat, 2014-11-22 08:36

So it takes a heap of fisheries officers and a team of scientists from Murdoch Uni to remove 1 Australian native fish from a man made lake which contains no endangered minnows yet meanwhile Ciclids are spreading in the Swan and Canning Rivers and thousands of native minnows go down the throats of Redfin every day in our rivers. Mmm nice work fellas.

Have definately heard of trout cod, my missus even caught one. I find it very hard to believe there are trout cod in WA. They were almost extinct, but now thanks to a hatchery over East, they have released thousands into the murray darling, ovens and keiwa rivers. I doubt they had any spare to send over here

sorry to burst ya bubble fellas

Sun, 2014-11-23 07:14

but 15kg isn,t overly large for a murray cod.

and kingfisha1, where are the photos of these trout cod??

We used to get the odd trout cod in the murrumbidgee whilst fishing for other things.

The reason they won't stock natives over here is because of the marron and the threat of everything eating them, or so I am told.

Kingfisha, I think you will

Kingfisha, I think you will find what you caught is a Nightfish. The local version of Murray Cod but unfotunately for us dosent grow to a size worth fishing for them.

should be couple more cod in

Thu, 2014-11-27 19:39

should be couple more cod in that canning vale pond, plus a few golden perch and about 5 bass and a barra grown too big for it's aquarium 8 years ago?

whole food chain (spangled/poonta perch and yabbies) were already established before the roe hwy/midland translocation.

but then could be all wrong just dribbling crap lol

I'm still waiting to see just what other surprises come to light with people starting to fish the many and various ponds/lakes in the metro or near metro are.
