How do you target YTK??

What seems to be the best way to target Yellow Tail Kingfish??

Do they just rock-up unannounced or can you target them as you would Sambos??

Once they're around they will hit Knife jigs, SPs and most baits.

They are heaps of fun to catch and better yet taste great cooked or raw.

I would like a bit of knowlege on how to actually target them ie; what time of year?, what kind of ground? wrecks, channels etc......

Cheers again.

And yes they can be burlied up - even so the biggest schools of them I have seen regularly seem to hang around roughtly half way between Carnac and the Rotto lighthouse on a direct line - 24 metres of water    l

grayzee and sunshine are on

Thu, 2011-10-06 09:49

grayzee and sunshine are on the right track, i dont keep a log but from memory found late nov through to may they rnt to hard to find, anchoring near reef structure (i dont do this when swells up) and heavy berley is the key, i use old even new mulies good to have 2/3 blocks, but also birds working will help you locate them, have seen the smashin the surface many occasions, would assume throwing metals or softys at them when this happens could work but i always lob an unweighted mulie with a hoodlum hook tail half hitched. i run heavy line, 50lb braid 80lb leader (good quality/even flurocarbon as they can be a bit funny at times) as im fishing quite shallow and when i first started to have success was losing alot more than i landed on 25lb mono, and these fish are only in the 4-8kg range. i have landed a few on 20lb braid but was drifting so it gets you away from the structure your likely to find them. try trolling around west end southern and northern side, if you locate some there will usually be more in the area. heres a little hint, bonus of the anchor and berley method is pinkys and dhuies coming up your berley trail and you obviously cant keep demersals on the southern side of west end, be patient aswell sometimes they show up in a berley trail in minutes other times its taken hours, if this happens move to another lump a couple hundred meters away and try again.

this method has produced quite a few ytks for me but my last 2 attempts only got me 2 nice little pinkys and a pair of soiled underwear as the swell was up and i shouldnt have been where i was.

Good luck

JD

Nver had one with an actual worm in it. At least half of the ones I've had from Parker Point have had that musy flesh problem though.

how to target?

Thu, 2011-10-06 11:25

i usually just line them up with the pointy end of my rob allen, and pull the trigger!

there is usually fark loads around rotto, but you have to be careful with how/where you target/catch them (tight restrictions all over the island). they are so unpredictable. they can show up when you arent expecting them, and not show when you are. i sometimes see them when diving for crays around my uaual metro lumps, and nearly allways see them diving at rotto.

as the others have said, burley hard. livies work well in a heavy burley trail, otherwise unweighted whole squid/mulies/herring/etc.

there are some absolute brutes i have seen diving down south. some so big, i havent even bothered trying to shoot, as i'm cetrain i'd loose my gun if i hit them. i have seen a few with worms, but generally they have been ok. they smoke up really good to.

Unweighted fresh baits around

Unweighted fresh baits around Rotto has worked well for me. I don't eat them though.

Over east coast

Thu, 2011-10-06 19:29

Over east coast when targeting YTK's in most cases they use live or fresh squid. I've actually caught 2 rats off the north mole a few years back on live squid, had a live herring on another rod but werent interested. They do take yakkas and other livies at times as well as mulies.
